... Springing from earlier post around service intervals I' d be interested in opinion on getting the oil changed at 9k regardless of what the book says. To be honest 18k seems a long time for a little turbo engine...
Do you think this would or could have any repercussions on warranty? (I will be using an independent garage who use genuine fiat parts and oil etc)

Any thoughts?

Regards
Roger

No reason why an early oil & filter change will affect the warranty, as long as you ensure that everything that is required under the warranty is done on time.

A dealer will do whatever you ask of course and there's no chance of any warranty impact by doing MORE than is required.

I actually like to change oil every 6 months in my cars (long story, but it keeps me happy....) and have just ordered a 5l can of the required Selenia Pure Energy oil, plus filter, to do an interim change on my 4x4 over Christmas. Car not due in for its annual check/change till April/May and I want to tiny engine to be running around in clean stuff, not grubby.

Interestingly enough, it seems the oil filter is not of the normal spin-on canister, but a filter insert for a fixed filter housing (just like it was on an old A-Series), so I expect to make a bit of a mess. Anyone else done a home oil/filter change before on a TA?

A lot of engines are changing to filter only, in a re-usable housing, less waste.
Don't put the old filter in the bin until every possible bit of oil has drained. IIRC half a litre of oil contaminates about 5 cubic metres of soil, killing everything. If possible, ask your local garage to add it to their disposal. Or look after it until the next shceduled service and ask the dealer to dispose of it, they are unlikely to charge for the disposal, if they want your servicing business.

I had the oil changed on my 4x4 TA at about 5000 miles - couldn't let the oil from the running-in period go any longer than that - and every 12 months - about 14k miles - thereafter. So third change will be in a couple of months' time. I watched the completion of the first change and they'd dropped the sump guard, so it's not something that I'd undertake myself.

similar story to my TA:)

only points to note the TA will take at least 10k miles to bed in fully, so that's at least 10k with SOME metal debris floating around,

Historically;
OLD tech iron engines..
1st fill oil had a different mix to aid bedding in, - obviously no longer the case if it's in there for 2 YEARS..,

Having worked with filter suppliers, the filter actually becomes more efficient after about 3000 miles, due to anything it collects helping catch other stuff, so no need to be afraid to leave it there as directed. New oil, of course can never do any harm, except to your pocket.

It has been said previously that the ECU needs to have a flag reset when the oil is changed. Can this be done using free ECUScan software, or does it need some other software ? Is this the case for all engines ?

I think you need the paid version of ECU Scan to reset service intervals. Check with the ECU Scan website.

I Believe chr1s is referring to "oil degradation" settings , rather than just "service intervals":)

AFAIK MES - 50 Euro version - can do ALL of that, (y)

as it's under warranty I've used a FIAT trained indy for my TA servicing,
My MES will get used for "modern" servicing after March 2016,:worship:

it appears to have all required access on my old JTD Marea - guessing it's pretty similar to your multi..,:)

Allegedly you can reset the oil change light (oil degradation indicator) without a tool - plenty of videos on YouTube show the process for the 500, which I should imagine will be similar: turn key to first setting (so dash lights come on), slowly fully depress and release the throttle three times within 10 seconds, and turn key off again. (Also though a suggestion that this is only for teh USA market?)

I had my first oil changed by the dealer when light came on (at about 19,000 miles, 4x4 Mulitjet)
