I seem to remember from one of Alan.D's posts that there are two different types of wheel bearing. One has a raised lip on the drive shaft side which may help in reducing the play! I wonder if these were mK1 bearings?

I don't want to go to the trouble of replacing the wheel bearings but I thought that if I fitted a washer or two at the wheel end of the shaft it would push the shaft a little further into the box. Is there any reason I can't do this, assuming I can find washers the right size?

Your right about the bearing but the washers between the inside of the bearing and the driveshaft were rubbing which knackered them so they would be even smaller if you know what I mean. However if you look at the guide section and the bearing replacement if yours are the same as mine you could add an additional inner driveshaft washer I don't have any spare but tony might and they are at least 2-3mm wide. Just make sure there is enough of the shaft for the main nut to fit and LOCK in place

The first pic was the wrong bearing (and shouldn't have a washer) the second one was the right one (and does need the large washer I'll see if I can get a pic of the washer, they go into the rear of the bearing covering most of the green seal

You're talking about the spacer (no. 6)in this pic?

driveshaft_hub.jpg

I thought about buying one from FIAT. They're cheap enough. They're not flat though, they have a raised flange around one edge. They might not sit flush together. Next time I'm here I'm going to take both driveshafts off and use both spacers on one side to see if it will work. If it does I'll get one (or two, maybe both sides need it, I'll check that when I have the other drive shaft off). Plenty to do on the next trip!

I want to take another week off and sort it now. Don't think that would go down too well though.

Hmmm, if I fitted the spacer the other way around I'd gain about 2mm anyway. Not too sure about the wisdom of fitting it the wrong way around though. Clamping it up with the shaft nut would put a lot of strain on the unsupported recessed part of it.

You cant fit it the opposite way round as it would snag on the main piller the bearing bolts to, the flange is bigger than the recess and holds against the bearing (you would basicaly be bolting the bearing to the pillar and it won't turn very well :( ). I very much doubt the pressure will be a factor as it would be shared throughout the entire circumference of the flange washer and is very heavy guage metal.

Hmmm. In that case putting another one on flange to flange should give me the extra few mm I need. Hopefully the shaft nut will still have something to lock to. Oh well, I won't find out for quite a while now. I'm putting the 'Rat back in storage this morning and have plenty of other things to do today before I set off.

Chris, it uses the standard Panda 4x4 exhaust system (slightly modified by cutting off the last 12" or so of tailpipe. The one that's on at the moment came off the donor Panda and is in pretty good condition. I'll have it off you though at some point in the future, logistics allowing.

Don't feel obliged to keep hold of it though. If you get a good offer take it. It might be months before I'm here again for a decent length of time.

Cheers.
