General New Sisley owner, old Sisley problems

I had a quick go tonight before i tried changing all the locks over and broke one while trying to secure the little ball and socket on the back... IDIOT!.. anyway it's not the end of the world.

anyway, it ran for about 12 seconds before the engine got so lumpy that it fell over itself... which for me felt very much like the timing. I am thinking that it hasn't been adjusted since the LPG was removed and the normal carb put back on. it may have slipped a tooth on the timing belt since we got back from Accrington since i was practicing bunny hops in the car park having fun trying to drive it for the first time.

I shall have to break open the hynes manual to see what it says about adjusting the timing.

Is it getting fuel does the exhaust smell of fuel after trying to start it?
yes, but only a little but it doesn't smoke

It would have to slip a couple of teeth to be that far out not to start. match the timing marks on the cam with the timing marks at the gearbox. If it's out you'll need to take off the belt to re-set. If the timing marks are OK then you will have to loosten the top & bottom 10mm nut on the distributor and move it back & forward till you find the right spot then get a strobe to set properly.

ok, after putting alll the locks back i popped under the car to have a look at what i have taken on...

there are some interesting scars... split leaf spring and dent in the cross member of the floor where something exhaust shaped has been banged upwards. quite a bit of surface rust, but on the whole not too bad

So where do i track down a 4x4 leaf spring...?

oh yeah, shouldn't there be a rubber gasket under the gear lever...? I have got a bit of one but not much...

got the engine running after a bit of full choke and blipping on the accelerator pedal...after a few minutes it would run but only at full choke. Looks like i'm going to have to learn how to tune a weber carb.

That bit of the crossmember looks to uniform to be hit and is probably extra room for the exaust as it bobbs up n down. The leaf spring is it def broken? there should be a metal ring round them that holds them in place I take it the front part is straight in comparison with the back. I have a couple of spare shocks in better nic than those as it looks a bit worrying on the securing ring. There is a problem with the gearlever cover but that's easy sorted.

One thing you say about the lever being a bit porridge, I'm sure the cross bar should be sitting flat on that shaft and a split pin should be holding it in place it looks like it's sitting too far forward. Overall it looks ok nothing a good waxoil wouldn't fix.

well the back sticks out to the left and the front remains straight as far as i could tell... i must confess i only really noticed it once i had the pics on the computer... as i didn't physically get under the back end of the car... just stuck the camera down there... i will have another look tomorrow.

the metal strap/ring has gone somewhere else...

Are the rear shocks any different to the 2 wheel drive rear shocks?... if not then i think i have a pair also... they're not monroe but they are new.

k, todays fiddling produced some positive results... the distributor contact has got a burnt end... so i ordered a new one... I have ordered new HT leads (BOSCH 99p) and i have got new spark plugs waiting in the wings. I suppose i should sort out a new timing belt... but i haven't even seen the one on the car yet... so that can wait.

I thought I would prepare for other items on the list... like the rear suspension dampers. a descaling and wd40 left to soak in for tomorrow.

I have a look at the front discs (well one anyway) and they have a crust around the edges but don't look too bad but are soon to be replaced along with pads. I have got new hoses for the front brakes...

the fuel level in the inline filter seems very low... looks too low to make it up to the line out... which is wierd.

and I found the nipple for the axle... but the grease gun i borrow seems to have a socket which is too small... he used it on minis so perhaps it is an imperial measurment.

and i thought i would see how the alloy fit on... whether they interfered with the calipers or struts...they seem to clear the calipers by about 1cm and the damper by 2cm.

here's some pics

Nice alloy, but i prefer the white steel wheel.
Alloy looks smaller diameter next too it... says it's 13 x5.5 but looks different.
I think i shall do what Alan does... and stick some proper off road tyres on the steelsor alloys... haven't decided.

well that would give me a chance to get the gloss magnolia taken off the steelies if i can transfer the rubber to the alloys for the moment. I wonder if quick fit would entertain a transfer without a tyre sale...? well it needs a new rear box on it i guess... so perhaps i could tie it into that.

Looks Good Tony those alloys are :yum:

The grease nipple is a tight fit as the pressure is quite high when pumping the grease through and should be tight.

I was thinking that on the 26th I'll come down in the BMW early and we can have a go at the Selecta, and maybe some bits on the Sisley as I have a grease gun that will fit and poss bring down the old shocks for you to look at if you want them etc then come back up here ready for an early rise to the ferry for the NIIMC meet.

Oh! and I've got both Italian Job films on the DVD changer (y)

Alan there's a couple of guestrooms you can use to rest your eyes before in the unearthly set off time on the 27th (3am? or something). I suspect it's probably quicker to get to Carlisle from mine than yours anyway.

The Selecta would need the engine dropping/seperating again... are you sure you want to go there again ? :)...

I have a pair of shocks which i will have a go at fitting today... they look too shiny compared to the rest of the under side of the car. I will need to source a offside leafspring in the near future... although for road use it's not that important... i will cable tie it in place for the moment just to make sure it doesn't drop into someones windscreen later.

That's very kind Alan but i don't think the panda has enough juice to fit a DVD player and screen.

OK the joint is greased the dampers are swapped... will post a pic tomorrow.

I know you wouldn't be able to sleep if i don't show you that my safety has now been improved... a little. but for a none moving car it's very well supported now.

I spent the morning with a wire brush and hammerite Kurust and hammerite internal spray (white foamy stuff rather than the tar black stuff) going over all the places that are not obvious... replacing plastic panels. I will be soaking the bolts in metal treatment to lose the rusty stuff and spray them with black hammerite before replacing them... that should keep them rust free until the end of the month :).
