Im planning on doing the Mongol Rally this summer. For those of you who havent heard of this event, it basically involves driving old underpwered cars 8000 miles around the world from london to ulaan bataar.

see www.walestomongolia.co.uk or www.mongolrally.co.uk for more info

The car I am taking is a Lancia Y10, which is basically identical to a panda in terms of running gear and chassis. I was wondering if it would be possible to fit panda 4x4 suspension on the front, and to somehow raise the rear suspension too. Anyone got any ideas what springs might fit??

Jim

i thought the y10 was the lancia equiv of a fiat uno, hence the boxxyness factor, and if you compare the rear end overhang its all different.

you'd have been better off just buying a panda mate;) or getting donated it!!

I wanted to do the mongol rally but its just too easy!!

I am doing the RRR (russian roullette rally), its more or less the same route as the MR, but we are going thru iran, turkmenistan and then out of back end of mongolia (bearing in mind mongolia is the size of the whole of western europe!!!) and back into russia then round china and north korea to end up in the soggy rusty docklands town of vladivostok!! then fly or take trans siberian home!!

doing it in either a volvo 240estate (Got a saloon at the mo, hoping to make a trade with someone) or an audi 100 cc avant

good luck with the MR, and I heard they are taking the 2nd batch of 100entries next week!!! ITS SET TO BE HUGE!!! over 1km of crap cars lined up down london:rolleyes:

Not sure about the rear but if you open the bonnet it looks like you are looking in a panda so the front susp will I'm sure be the same. But you would probably get more clearance quicker if you have room to fit larger tyres using 155/80 instead of 145/80 or maybe even 165/80 maybe try to borrow a set first.

Good luck BTW (y)

The y10 is basically a panda with lancia badges, and is very rare in this country, so why not take a late 80's fiesta, or a metro?. I wonder what Giacosa would think of this idea :chin:

The Lancia runs on 14inch wheels as standard I think (13 for the Panda) with a larger rolling radius, so bigger m/s tyres on panda wheels is a good idea for traction but wont give you extra ground clearance.

The panda 4x4 springs should fit on the front, do they change the ride hieght guys? I would fit the panda 4x4's sump guard however.

The omega rear axle does not really lend itself to being raised, it would ruin its geometry and I would imagine put extra strain on the mountings.

If you plate the underside of the car smooth front to back you will be amazed at the ground you can cross.

Lancia did make a 4x4 Y10 for the home market!

The Panda chassis is almost identical to the panda - same omega rear axle. I got the Y10 because it was £120 with six months tax and mot on it, and came with loads of history and spare parts. Any panda i see in similar condition is at least £200, and about £400 for the 4x4s.

I am slightly concerned about taking a rareish car out of the uk, but its not exactly mint, and I really dont think anyone is going to miss it!

That russian roulette thing looks fantastic! Last year i drove all over europe in a volvo 740 turbo which cost £200, and it didnt miss a beat, apart from having new brake pads fitted in central berlin....

Y10s have 13" wheels, and mine has the skinniest tyres ive ever seen! It will be running on colway dirt tyres which have been donated to the cause, and should give us some traction when the tarmac runs out ;)

Did the 4x4 pandas have a sump guard as standard? I was planning to make my own out of chequer plate, but if i can scrounge a secondhand one that might be easier.

I know of one y10 4x4 in this country, but it has been stood for a few yrs, and apparently the 4wd wont engage! could be an interesting project though...

no one likes the Y10 here, the Lancia boys say its a Fiat in drag and the Fiat owners say its a Panda that rusts faster! dont worry, take it away!

Im crying The Y10 is crying I hope your happy

I have a y10 turbo gearbox and driveshafts in my garage if anyone wants them. And a radiator. £50 for the box, £20 for the rad ;)

Hi Jim il bite your arm off for them :) My names Kris I emailed ya yesterday about swapping the door for my Y10. On the subject of the door its a white fila like yours but I think I can fit it up with a manual winder from a Panda if you like.

You'll end up with a turbo eventually kris but one part at a time, should be ready when you retire :)

Cheeky Bugga! :) Its suprising that parts still turn up at all. People seem to keep the bits when the car falls off its twig.
