Hi guys, hoping for a bit advice before my car tips me over the edge. I have a 16 plate 500x.
The engine light has came on along with the start & stop system failure light and also the electronic parking brake failure light ? all in one day! Any ideas of what I can do to sort this before a garage completely rips me off ? on my screen the battery seems fine, I read a bit on here saying it could be that. Any help would be great, thanks.

I doubt your screen is a reliable indication of state of battery.

If car has had little use during lock down and or short journeys then the battery is probably discharged.

Coming up for four years old the battery could be failing .

With the engine running engage and disengage the parking brake several times.
What does hand book say about parking brake light and what it is telling you?

The engine mil light require a code reader to tell why it has come on and turn it off.
They can be bought very cheaply if you are interested in finding out why light is on and possibly fixing it yourself before going to a garage.

Where are you in UK?

Hi :)

Battery is still prime suspect

A drop in voltage seen at sensors pops up an error

What point of journey did it happen?

Charlie

Yes the engine light is very likely to have been caused by low voltage.

I'm thinking possibly worth just getting a new battery.

Nic, can you fit a new battery yourself or have a friend that can fit one with our guidance? Buying the correct stop start battery yourself will be hugely cheaper.
With our help.

Do not go to Kwik fit or anyone like them for battery.

Thanks! I’m in Edinburgh, Scotland. Had a look on Halfords and a battery is around £150. The car hasn’t been lying unused during lockdown, i travel down the motorway to the next town to work most days. I’ve no clue about cars, I just drive it ? yeah I could definitely get help to fit a new battery. Thanks guys

Yeah sorry, had been driving for around 10/15 mins and had just joined the dual carriageway so was speeding up, when it all started beeping and flashing at me

If you can post the halfords battery number
We can try and point you in the direction of the same quality battery much cheaper , probably mail order to your door.

In which case that looks like the correct battery size, 096 stop start.
Don't get an 096 non stop start as that will cause all sorts of problems.

Before disconnecting current battery switch off ignition, remove key from car completely , put key somewhere safe away from car. Wait 15 minutes only then disconnect existing battery negative wire first. Then positive wire. Remove battery hold down bolt/fastener. Remove battery.
Fit new battery , secure hold down, connect positive wire and connect negative wire last..... all done , check car starts ok rest clock .

Good thinking .

In your car it is likely that the battery charging is controlled by a computer.
The computer basis it's charge strategy from a signal from an intelligent battery sensor, IBS , often built into / onto a battery negative lead.

At some point you could try waiting half an hour after switching engine off, carefully and gently disconnectecting the battery negative wire for 5minutes or so and then reconnecting the battery. This may reset the charge control computer to see the current condition of the battery.
