My 1.6 petrol Multi is coming up to 6 years old but has only done 40,000 miles.

The service schedule says change the cambelt at 5 years but I am inclined to wait until 50,000 miles (probably about 8 years).

Cambelts seem pretty reliable on Multiplas - or am I just kidding myself?

Anyone know what the typical cost would be?

I have just changed my belt on my JTD at 60 K at about 5 years and although the belt looked very good, the tensioner was cream crackered  and would have caused problems very quickly... I won't be waiting quite so long next time !

cam belts r normally ok for about 60,000 miles but check ur handbook or just phone a fait dealer (sum alfs need changing after 36,000) but u should be ok a resonable garage should charge about £150

My diesel Multi goes into a local independent garage (who have a good reputation for honest work) tomorrow, for timing belt change + tensioners etc, and new drive belt + tensioner.

Using FIAT parts the total guaranteed price is £275. Which compares well with my local FIAT dealer's quote of £306 for just the timing belt change.

Get it done ! - Cost of new engine £2k or more versus £300 to have the job done by a Fiat Main agent. I know because I've had a cambelt failure and it's a pretty bad experience !

My normal local non-franchise garage quoted £250 but couldn't do the job as a special tool is needed and 'there aren't enough Multiplas around to make it worthwhile getting one' - any thoughts ?

3 Years or 30k , its not the belt that is the problem its the tensioner and the idler.
Mine was sat idle for 2 weeks while i did the clutch and i also did the belt , upon taking the tensioner off it had seized solid(n) engine is scrap if the belt goes.

Dont forget to have the water pump done at the same time as they have a plastic impellor which can become detatched and its a cambelt off job to renew it.
Only about £20.

Timing belt change cost me £87 + vat. My sister's belt went on her Multipla – kaputt – breakers yard afterwards.
