Hi,

Wonder if anyone can help?

Advised by the fiat garage to replace battery after a recent service - which I am in the processes of doing. However the replacement battery is too big to fit in space left by old battery. Have checked battery specs on side of case it does say suitable for a Multipla on the side!?! Checked with battery supplier and they confirm its the right one for a petrol multipla 1.6 coming up for 3 years old.

I have noticed that there is a small tray which the old battery sat on. This is being held in place by a rubber plug. I'm sure if I pulled hard enough it would come away. I'm not sure I want to do this as the same sized battery would then slip left and right. Even so the new battery is about 4 inches wider and would be a very tight squeeze.

How hard can it be to replace a battery?!?

Any ideas?

Hi there,

I'm experiencing the same problem and just found your thread via google. Did you get this problem resolved. If so, how?

I know this thread is a few years old but I just can't find anything relating on the www. Fingers crossed at a response.

The tray u speak off is not held by a rubber plug it should be a over flow hose incasae the battrey leaks if u lift this out then u can messure the tray then the battrey but its never gonna sit flush anyway hope this helps

Thanks for the quick response. I checked several sites for recommended fitting dimensions etc. and bought a battery accordingly but when trying to fit it in it was bigger than the old one.

I took out the tray and tubing and it appears the battery fits into the seating of where the tray was. The problem is that overhanging to the left of this space are a couple of small fuse boxes which is obstructing the battery from being able to be fitted properly. Very annoying indeed.

Sounds like a pain are the fuses fixed or can they be moved to some where else like under the battrey tray

Just sussed it after plenty of head scratching. It looks like there was about an inch short for the cabling of the Maxi-fuse box and the single modular ABS fusebox which made the one for the ABS difficult to attach to the glow plug and engine cooling fan fuses that are situated just above the battery. So whoever did the wiring just attached the ABS fusebox to the Maxi-fusebox which meant a lot less space for the battery.

Got the fuseboxes how it should be (as depicted in manual) and managed to squeeze and secure in the new battery (without the tray and rubber piping).

I wonder why all these battery shops specify a battery size that's bigger than the original? Not sure whether the old 60ah battery was the original (as we bought the car 2nd-hand almost 3 years ago) but I always thought it was a bit underpowered for our '02 110 JTD.

If it under powered look at threads for egr I got a 110 as well mine had money put in to the engine that makes it quicker

I think he meant the battery was underpowered:bang:

I had a similar issue, some manufactures other than the original make slight errors in dimensions due to different models of the same system being built. Be sure to match the model number exactly as it is off the old battery. Hope this helps.(y)

interesting thread, I too was having the same problem
