We bought a 2007 Multipla 1.9 diesel from a Fiat dealer a year ago. Four weeks ago it began losing power and was very sluggish in low gears. The dash warning light came on so we took it in to a local garage, who cleaned the filter and seemed to cure it. But a week later the performance worsened again, and the warning light came on again. This time we took it to a Fiat dealer, who tell us it will cost £2300 to replace the DPF filter and the EGR valve. I'm horrified. The car has done ten thousand miles in the last year - and our habit is city driving with a long motorway run every two weeks or so. We live in SW London and this year the car's been to Oxford twice, Ipswich, Portsmouth and Reading - so plenty of motorway driving.

If this hasn't cleared the filter how on earth are you supposed to? And what's the point of a warning light coming on AFTER the damage is done?

I can't find another mechanic prepared to touch the job.

I've filed a complaint with Fiat.

Anyone got any advice? Paying 25% of the purchase price for a couple of filters is a very painful proposition.

Or a quick check for the egr is to at a stand still rev the car up a few times then drive it as this will cure it for a few mins if not u can remove and clean the egr instead of replacing it and the price is very high for the work that needs doing

I assume most of that £2300 cost is for the DPF replacement?

I've had problems with the DPF with my 2006 Multipla Multijet, which was due to the shorter journeys I make. Once or twice a month it would go into limp mode and I had to get a forced regeneration performed. When I did longer journeys no problems at all.

In the end I had the DPF removed (deleted), this involved getting the ECU updated and having a DPF delete pipe fitted(my local garage can make them up). Since the car is so much more responsive, seems to have more power, mpg has increased and it still passes the MOT, at a total cost of less than £400, maybe a cheaper option?

I have seen on other forums that the particulate filter has been removed and just cleaned with great success , i.e the Chrysler forum. worth looking into a bit more I think

His is fiat forum and the dpf has been cleaned before hand they can be cleaned but it aint solvein the problem by all rights I have never heard of a multipla witch has any thing to do with a chrystler

My 2007 Multipla has now done 90,000 miles about 6 months ago I had the same problem, car sluggish, load of crap coming out off the exhaust. Then it dies on me completly and wont start, I get it towed to the local garage. Whilst the car was in the mechanics, when he was trying to work out why the thing wouldn't start, he had the brain wave to take of the DPF filter, car started, so he cuts open the filter, removes half of it (inside it like a honeycomb brick), puts it back together and says job is done. I still get problems when I get car back I then do some digging on here and find it could be either the Egr valve or mass air flow sensor. Cleaned the EGR valve (was full of black dust), replaced the Mass Air Flow Sensor. All is fine. Was concerned now that half my DPF filter is gone, will it pass the MOT test. Flyed through, mechanic said gases were nowhere near a fail level. The only downside, I have to clean the EGR valve with every service, can be a pain in the butt to get to, but once you done it a few times it gets easier.
