Fault Code 236 over boost solenoid flap

Hi there muliplians,
I had the red engine management light come on my 115 JTD on 10 miles into a 130 mile journey and the engine went into limp mode. It could still travel at 65-70mph due to gearing but little power for overtaking as no turbo.
Had a mobile diagnostic chappie plug into it and he said it was to do with inlet sensor but could do no more than re=set it. Needless to say it was fine for ten miles thenm on came the engine management light and back into limp mode. Strangely at one stage when the engine got hotter than normal (Dartford crossing queueing) the light went out and back came the turbo - but only for a couple of miles.
Just brought the car back from Auto electric firm who have detected fault code 236 with the words (they think) over boost solenoid flap. They kindly reset ECU and turbo now seems to be working (I could rev it up to 4,500 but didn't like to go further) but I guess it's only a matter of time.
Can any wizzes out there cast any light?
Thanks,
Brian

Thanks Matt.
I've gone through the thread which is a little frightening.
However perhaps I should check for chafed pipes, then see if I can make sure the cat not blocked, then lok at air filter (though I'm sure I repklaced it not long ago) and finally find out where the over boost solenoid is and how to replace.
Thanks again

overboost valve is on the side of the bracket that the air filter box sits on from memory.

Re: Fault Code 236 over boost solenoid flap

I will certainly address the boost solenoid but I'm worried should the engine management light inform me that I'm back in limp mode first.
Am I right in stating that this will mean I will be in limp mode regardless of what I fit until I have it reset?
And if so is there a way a novice like me can reset it or do I have to enlist the help of a professional?
Ant help gratefully appreciated.

Re: Fault Code 236 over boost solenoid flap

tbh i dont know 100%, because ive always had the use of a fiat scanner.

you might find that the ecu will come out of limp home mode once you fit a new boost valve, you might find that if you leave the battery disconnected overnight it will delete the errors, or it may even delete it after it hasnt picked the fault up after 3 duty cycles. (basically 3 journeys).

but even if you fit the part yourself itll probably be cheaper for you to have the codes reset by your local garage than a fiat main dealer, shop around though as prices vary.

Re: Fault Code 236 over boost solenoid flap

Just a quick update to say that I fitted a new map sensor and everything was fine till we hit the motorway when that dreaded engine control light announced its presence.
I ordred an overboost valve from Shop4Parts in readiness for my next bit of fitting.
However purchased a scanner ro reset the ECU. ECU reset, motoways tackled and to date no dreaded light!
I've hung onto the overboost valve in disbelief that the problem is cured.
While ordering rear wheel bearing from shop4parts enquired abour returning valve and they are quite happy to refund.
Always helpful and efficient at shop4parts.
Now I know when I return the overbost valve that dreaded light is going to reappear!!!
Thanks all out there for your help
Brian
ps one worrying thing that shop4parts told me was that my car was manufacured in November 2000...its was first registered in April 2003!
