Ok, My tyres are about 6 months old and I was under the car the other day and noticed they were bald on the inside on both sides.

I know the tyre needs to have 1.6mm for 75% of the tyre from centre but what is the law for the outside and inside edge??

I went to a MOT garage who said they were legal JUST, thought it might be the tracking but did not have time to do a proper look.

I then took it to a Tyre Gargage who said they were Illegal.

They both said about the 75% but the tyre place said they were illegal as I have no tyre tread showing on the inside even though my tread is a about 5mm on the rest of the tyre.

I have looked on the tintanet and thats not much help either, though one site said it had to be 75% from centre and the outer and inner do NOT have to show tread.

Who's right???

Any help would be greatly appreciated guys

another way to look at it it this:
regardless of amount or place of coverage, when the cord starts showing through the tyre needs changing, i'd guess that you're probably not too far away from that on the edges?

What tyres are they?

Toyo Proxies.

No metal yet but I don't think it will be too long. I don't want to replace them if I don't have too due to still having over 5mm.

I dont want to have a random stop of the local plod either with 6 points and a stupid fine either.

a performance tyre, with the "shoulders" almost worn through, regardless of the condition of the rest of the tread, and leaving aside any legal issues for the moment, the question to ask yourself is....do i really want to be taking corners relying of a tyre that could well have its structural components exposed to the elements?

coming back to the tyre problem itself, seems to be a serious issue which needs to be investigated, identified and resolved

as for legal, the first bit of wire that pokes through puts you in the frame for 3 points, it is unsafe both for you and other road users hence the harsh penalty

i'd say chalk it up as a loss, and get it sorted as recommended asap

good luck

Find it hard to believe with Toyo's, as Jai said there is something seriously wrong for that to happen after 6 months

1.6 mm across the centre three quarters of the tyre if the edges are bald and this does not encroach into the centre three quarters the tyre is legal if you are wearing both edges your tyre pressures are low

you are going to have to change them wether there is 5mm of tread or not,if there down to the wire there fecked!!

... and when the tyre blows out your car and you could possibly also be fecked (n) Seriously though, I have had a strut top bearing on the NSF fail on my Malaga 1.5GLX :)confused: you know... The System Porsche engined spanish flavoured Regatta/Prisma re-hash), and shave the inner edge tread blocks off the NSF Pirelli P8 with 4.5 mm in the course of 3-4 days and gutting though it is, it is just one of those things :bang:

Think you need to get the steering checked over before you sacrifice any more tyres though... good luck!
