I've been using Selenia Racing 10W60 oil in my Tipo Sedicivalvole. The problem I'm noticing is that during summer oil temperature can raise to 130 degrees (which is near red line) when I'm driving at high speed/high rpms (say, on highway).

As I need to change my oil soon I'm considering switching to another oil... Do you think it would help, IOW is this the problem with oil or maybe it's just the fact that engine is so cramped and that it doesn't have oil cooler (like the turbo version)? If you think another oil would be better, which one would you recommend?

Regards,
Goran Tomas

think oil cooler is the only good and not that diffecult option.

if your running the car 2 race speeds it generates to much heet for the normal cooling system to handle.

So a good used oil cooler would defintly do the trick, or you could consider a oil / coolent thingy (dunno the english word for it) VW uses them, it transfers the heat from the oil to the cooling water.
It also works the other way round, it heats up our oil to operating temperature faster, becouse of the cooling water heating up faster then the oil, so it tranfers that heat to the oil.

yes, fit an oil cooler. iam not a fan of selenia oils. ive seen 2 engines go bang on it. whether it was the oil's fault is debatable. i now always use castrol magnatec and swear by it. for the tipo, use the 15/40. this is the same spec i recommend for the turbo engine. the oil comes out of the sump nearly as clean as when it went in. shows its not breaking down in service. and change the oil and filter every 3000- 5000 miles.:)

The halford's fully synth 5-40 is on offer at the mo. I only use the best, Silkolene Pro S Race 10w-50. However it is £40 a pop. I'm only using that as with turbocharged engines you need good stuff. Otherwise I would use halfords. It's by a well known manufacturor I can't remember the name of...

the 5/40 i think is too thin. i would stick with a 15/40. it will cover for any wear in the engine. another good fully synthectic matthew is motul race oil. not easy to source though. the millers has a good name. and the silkolene good also. pensoil is good but dear. i will stick with castrol. get a good deal at my local factors:) and its quality oil with a great reputation.:) (y)

Yes Motul is highly recommended, However I prefer the Fuchs stuff. It's horses for courses tbh. I tend to think 15/40 is a little too thick for winter for my purposes, however for most of the tuned coupe's it's the preffered choice.

You've already been asked to stop advising people to use thinner oils than receommended by the manufacturer. The official Fiat Forum advise is to use the oil recommended for your car by Fiat.

Ah Simon! You have special powers like spiderman knows when someone is in danger, so it is your "spidey sense" tingles when there is a slight oil confusion.

:p

Have you any deals on the Silkolene PRO S 10-50 at the mo? I need some more. If it's not on offer, do you know when it will be? thanks matt (fccuk)

10w-60 is too thick.

Thick oils cause more friction, heat and wear.

I would personally use a 5w-40 this oil will not only have less viscous drag but also dissapate heat better.

The recommended viscosity when hot is sae 40 for this car, not sae 60.

Cheers
Simon
simon.
this oil is not to good on a partly worn engine though. the 15/40 will help the engine and bearings that are a little worn. the 5/40 will pi** through surely.:)

i am using mobilf1(5w-40) and it´is very good..i was using selenia but i dont like it..and oil temperature on summer while i am driving faster is also 130 degrees..and i have oil cooler????

i have a lot of brands..i can buy castrol but here it is not good oil because it is not original(made in turky and albania:) )..i heared motul is good?

Do not use 5w40, it's far too thin. Reccommended grade is 15w40.

A 5w40 will circulate quicker from cold, which makes some people think it must be better, but won't provide the necessary film strength to give mechanical protection.

Plus, as Sumplug says, a 5w40 oil in an older engine designed for 15w40 will leak.

if you can get motul, use it. but only 15/40 spec. its a v/good oil.:)

and do you know why oil temperature when i am driving faster(high rpms) is 130°c?is that normal or what?and what pressure should be?

if you drive at high speeds, you oil temp and pressure will go high i would expect about 110 - 120 degrees c and oil pressure about 5 bar max, possibly a bit lower. depends on oil.:)
