Hi Everybody,

Fiat Seicento Sporting 1.1 2001. Recently had a problem with a split hose blank emptying my entire cooling system of water. I have put a new blank on, flushed out the cooling system and put some nice fresh new coolant in.

However, for some reason the radiator fan comes on quite regularly, and there is that smell of a hot engine.

I've checked the whole system - its full of coolant to the correct level and there aren't any air locks or anything. The engine also has plenty of oil in it.

Can't quite figure it out so some advice would be appreciated.

Also - am I able to top up my gearbox oil directly from the breather on top of the gearbox? It looks pretty dry in there and didn't know if there should be an level of oil i should be looking for?

Thanks

Dave

Hi Dave, and welcome,

I'm not too familair with the sei sporting but our cinq sporting always SMELT warm - think this was "normal" lots of people fitted dash-operated fans..,

gearbox- don't recall a "breather" normally with FIAT boxed , there is a tapered plug ( like an engine oil sump one)halfway up the front face of the gearbox casing,

on level ground remove the plug, and use a screwdriver / similar to see if the oil is at the thread height, fill with a syringe until oil runs out of the same hole,

Cheers Charlie,

It just seems a bit strange that before it emptied itself of coolant and I repaired and re-filled it, the fan wouldn't kick in as often and it didn't really smell.

Very strange!

I'm not sure what a "hose blank" is.........

Have you bled the system? Consider a temperature gauge to replace the "whoops! too late!" light.

Don't refil through the breather. The level/filler plug is a 12mm plug (allen key) on the front face of the gearbox. Just fill through there till the gearbox oil starts to dribble out. That's it.
