Hi everyone, recently bought a cheap 2001 punto for my daughter, it's been great until the last week when the power steering has gone off. Just been to friendly garage where they ran a diagnostic for free ! Motor has gone, I'm ok with changing column and motor but not sure how the airbag cover comes off, do you simply pull it off ? any help appreciated. Oh one other thing if I just change motor does it still have to be calibrated to the ECU ?:bang:

Welcome to The Fiat Forum! I'd take care with the airbag explosive though! Disconnect the battery for a few hours before you start work!

Yes Examiner needs to calibrate the new stuff. Did the garage see & read a code at all? Did they share that code with you? Just looking to save you a few quid & a little disapointment. May not be the motor / column so it's wise to get all the info you can before comitting to changing it all.

Thanks for the help guys. garage didn't tell me the code that came up but have used these guys for about 5 years for MOT's and know they can be trusted. He did reset the error code and as soon as wheel was turned it was coming up again as motor fault. I was a bit suprised as i've read it is very rarely the motor, but hey ho it has done 105,000 m. Have found a nearby scrappy who has a motor for £50 so might be worth a shot. Thanks will4318 for the guides

There is a common fault in the wiring behind the glove box. Sort that, get the airbag ECU reset and it may well fix the fault. Fiat do it from £80 or get yourself the ELM cable set and Fiatecuscan software on a laptop.
