I recently bought a car with a private plate on it, I don't really care for the plate much and thought of selling it, from what I understand,
I first must pay the DVLA to assign my car a new age related plate,
Then I have to pay to keep the private plate so they don't get it??

If I'm correct about those then fine, but has anyone got anything to say about the actual process of selling a plate? Anyone who's done it before could you share your experience?
How do I determine how to price it?
Am I likely to be waiting forever for it to sell?

Any advice welcome, thanks :)

I'd look for similar/close plates for an idea of price. Does it say something?

There's a site (http://dvlaregistrations.direct.gov.uk/) and you can put in plates and it gives a price.

You could go through a plate selling agency for a sale, but obviously they'll take their cut!

You don't have to change the number on your car before you sell it. Leave it on the car until it sells and then you can transfer it directly to the other car. The transfer will include a new number for your car. State that the buyer pays the fees. I've done this twice, one was a plate dealer trying ebay for the first time. he included fees in his price but started the auction at below the cost of the fees. Apparently he didn't realise that he had to sell it whatever the price. I was the only bidder

The other was from a friend who needed the money. I made the mistake of doing it at the same time as the MOT and tax was due. The local DVLA office made a mistake and I ended up with 5 different tax disks in two weeks. Normally it's straight forward.

Ifs it's a GOOD plate, then think about selling it else just sell car with it on.
It cost £80 to put a paste on retention and DVLA send you a new plate to put on your car. Then you've got you inform insurance of change then you've got yo get new plates made up for your Catt.
Is it worth it or not?
