Important Information – Please Read!
This process will physically rewrite the EEPROM memory on your CN+ unit, hence is very similar to a BIOS update for a computer. Whilst every effort has been made to ensure the accuracy of the following guide, there is no guarantee that this procedure will work. Even though members of this forum have shown a very high success rate for this procedure, the risk of damage to the CN+ is a factor to consider.

The FiatForum cannot be held accountable for any damage caused to your CN+ unit, and this procedure is done at your own risk. Also, FIAT may not warrant the unit after you have performed the update.

Please refer to the forum thread here if you are unsure and want further advice / opinions.

Compatibility

Update Compatibility
The update is valid for Connect Nav+ units only (with the 7” TFT colour screen), and WILL NOT work for the Connect Nav or Connect units.

Update Information

Why do the update?
The current software release is version 9.8. Members who have done the upgrade have noticed the following improvements over previous versions (most noticeably 8.x releases):
  • Faster reactions on voice commands, better quality of recording voice messages and the phone conversations.
  • Sim Card is registered onto your mobile phone network quicker.
  • Option to delete previous calls, both received and dialled.
  • Place Name in navigation mode is automatically selected in relation to your vehicles position.
  • Map processing speeds greatly improved, especially when you change the scale.
  • Slight change to menus and the navigation function seems easier to programme.
  • Increased precision of maps and drawing of maps is more stable.
  • Bug Fixed: Removal of requirement of “PLAY” command repetition on the CD player function; i.e. “CD PLAYER – PLAY” on older versions would change to CD mode but not start playing, and a second “PLAY” was required. Now it starts playing automatically.
N.B. The characteristic of not remembering CD track positions and resetting them to the beginning of each track has NOT been updated.

What you need . . .

What you will need to perform the update
  • A PC with a CD-R burner
  • A blank CD-R disc
N.B. Experience has taught us that it you really should buy a branded disc of high quality, such as Imation or Sony, which will reduce the risk of errors when flashing the EEPROM.
  • ISO Image burning program (e.g. Nero)
  • The ISO image for the update CD, which can be found here
  • CN+ Setup CD for resetting language

N.B. If you don’t have your Setup CD, please see the main Connect Nav+ sticky thread in the Stilo section for further information.

Making the Update Disc

Burning the Disc:
Use an ISO image burning program, such as Nero, to burn the update CD. When burning, you must select the following options:
  • Write Method: Disc-at-once 96
  • Finalise CD
An image of these settings for Nero (version 6.6 used) is shown below.

N.B. Setting a maximum write speed of 24x is advisable; change this where it currently reads “Maximum” under the “Write Speed” setting.

The Update Procedure

Updating the CN+ Unit:
N.B. All stored contacts, agenda items e.t.c. will be deleted once this update procedure starts.
  1. Remove SIM Card (if installed).
  2. Turn on the CN+ unit and clear any error messages using the “Escape” key.
  3. Insert the update disk and wait for the unit to display “CD Error” on the screen. Press the “Escape” key to clear this message.
  4. Turn off the CN+ unit by pressing the “ON” key.
  5. Remove the ignition key, then wait 30 seconds.
  6. With the ignition key still removed, switch on CN+ by pressing the “ON” key.
  7. Now this is where you start to panic! The update procedure will begin. Ensure that the CN+ is not switched off during this procedure! The update may freeze for a few moments at 50%, this is normal.
  8. When completed, the FIAT logo will appear on the screen and the CD will automatically be ejected. Remove the CD.
  9. Switch the CN+ unit off using the “ON” button.
  10. Switch the ignition on, insert the Setup CD when it first turns on, and allow the unit to boot up automatically.
  11. Go into Setup -> Language to change the language.

Did it work?

If the bottom right-hand corner of the bootup FIAT logo page displays "9.8", it has worked successfully.
