I’m getting a heavy thud from the rear suspension over uneven surfaces, pot holes etc. Could it be the top mount on the shocks or broken spring?

Most likely the Shock EYE

Rubber degrades with age.. so mileage covered isnt necessarily a good indicator

Top mounts of the springs. Just take off the rear wheels to have a look.

How easy is it to fit the rear shock absorbers please ?

Very easy if you have a can of Plus Gas, a set of female torx sockets and a long breaker bar. I didn’t even have to take the wheel off. 20 minute job as long as you soak the bolts for a couple of days with the Plus Gas.
