Grande turns over but wont start

Hello all,

My grande has been running perfectly fine till the other day when it wouldnt start. it turns over but doesnt fire. i have charged battery and tested it and also had another vehicle jumping it when i have been trying to start it. i plugged my obd2 diagnostics checker in and its thrown up code p0335 (crankshaft postion A). ive changed the crankshaft sensor twice as i thought first one was faulty. ive continuity tested the cables back to ecu and they are good, and i also get a small voltage to the sensor when i try and start car. i have fuel to the injectors at a good pressure. i noticed a crack in the coil pack so i replaced that, still no joy. ive taken two spark plugs out and tested them while in the coil pack and no sparks. something is telling me its not even sending power to the coil pack as it turns over for two seconds then stops. really stuck know and would love some help.

thanks harry

So,if Im reading this correctly, you have no power to the coil pack itself?..

Re: Grande turns over but wont start

there are 6 pins in the connector to the coil pack, i had 12volts on one pin and nothing on the other 5

is the loom itself broken?..any continuity at the 'ends'?...same with broken coil pack?..

You lost me there.. it stops cranking?

Have you run a secondary earth cable?

Battery to gearbox

Re: Grande turns over but wont start

Unplug the coilpack and check for 12VDC between pins 1 & 6 at the connector. If the coilpack is not properly grounded it won't work...
As usual I recommend to measure this WITH a load (a 21W bulb will do).

Re: Grande turns over but wont start

I will try testing between pins 1 and 6 in the morning. As for running another earth cable I ran one from the negative on the battery to several different clean metal parts on the engine and that didnít make a difference, does it have to be somewhere on the gearbox? I will check the earth strap from the gearbox as well in the morning

Re: Grande turns over but wont start

I have 12v between the 1 and 6 pin. And the earth cable to gearbox is in near new condition, must have been changed before I got the car. I have tested all 4 spark plugs and I have zero continuity on all of them. Could the cracked coil pack have caused this as the car was running perfectly fine the other day. I tested a new spark plug I had for a different car and I had continuity so I believe I am testing them correctly

Re: Grande turns over but wont start

How did you measure the "continuity" on a spark plug ??

Re: Grande turns over but wont start

I measured from centre electrode of plug to the end tip. Using mulitimeter (ohm setting/ insolation resistance). All showed 0 on the reading which suggests a closed circuit to me

Re: Grande turns over but wont start

Well, if the reading @ the meter is 0, that means there is 0 ohm resistance, which is what's expected between the sparkplug central electrode and its outside connection. O.L display would be for Over Limit; that's an open circuit and this is not likely to happen on any sparkplug: it's made of a single piece metal core so can really hardly be open circuit. Have you measured the 12V @ the coilpack with a LOAD on the wires (connect a 21W bulb on the plug) ? You really need a load to rule-out "floating" voltages and resistive groundings !!
And BTW a craked coilpack is not a good sign...

Re: Grande turns over but wont start

I checked my "spark" by "home" way :-) I unplugged 1st valve HT lead from coilpack and moved it from it's connector appr. 0,5 centimeter. I saw spark jumps through air. But it was on running engine, you can check it during engine start, one by one...Litlle bit crazy, but you must see spark there. If not, there's some ECU problem or cabling problem between ECU and coilpack (because coilpack itself is new)

Re: Grande turns over but wont start

I have replaced spark plugs, HT leads and coil pack and have now tested coil plug with a bulb which lights up fine. I have tested all 4 spark plugs while connected to coil and earthed out on engine but nothing. So could this be an ECU problem or am I missing something. I think I may have to give in and take to a garage. Thanks

Re: Grande turns over but wont start

So it seems that your coilpack is fed correctly. The missing thing should therefore be the signals from the ECU. You replaced the CAM position sensor or the CRANK position sensor or BOTH ?? The ECU needs both informations to fire the (coil) sparks ...
