I know nothing about cars so please bare with me.

My blowers stopped working and a connector or something had melted so we replaced it with a new connector and a resistor. This fixed the problem but I left the wires dangling down in the footwell because I didn’t know where they came from.

When I had the blowers on 1-3 it smelt like burning so I could only have it on setting 4. It turns out my the resistor had been burning my matt. It gets too hot to even touch in a matter of seconds.

Does anyone know what the source of the problem is and how to fix it? Thank you.

You may know that this resistor pack is used to reduce the current available to the motor. So at full speed it is not part of the circuit and will feel cold. At the slowest speed (1st position) it is working hard and, as you've found, gets very hot! For this reason it fits into the air ducting for the heater (under the dashboard) have a look and you should be able to see the hole it fits in. The fresh (so cold) air being pulled through by the fan is drawn over it so cooling it. There are a number of you tube videos you might find helpful and, although I haven't looked, I'll bet there's something in the "guides" - See the banner at the top of the page.

By the way, if your car has a cabin (some call it pollen) filter this is a good reason to make sure it is changed regularly. If it gets clogged up the air flow will be significantly reduced so, apart from your heater not working so well, the resistor pack gets hotter, to it's detriment.
