Hi, I’m new to this forum and don’t have a lot of technical knowledge and would really appreciate some help.

I recently bought a Grande Punto 1.2 Dynamic (2006). It’s had a few issues so far but I’ve kept on top of things and got them fixed. However recently I’ve been experiencing power loss issues.

I was leaving from work on a 80 mile journey and I suddenly felt an overall power loss. My car was revving higher that it usually does and was struggling to go to 75mph whereas before it use to hit 80 mph without much trouble. I recalled from memory I could reach 70 mph at around 2500 rpm but now it’s just above 3000 rpm.

I gave it into the garage but they said it seemed fine. Any ideas what could be the issue? I might just paranoid but I really think it’s not perform the way it did before. It happened all of a sudden.

Additional Info: I had recently replaced the flexi pipe before experiencing this power loss.

I would really appreciate some help as I’ve been searching all over but not been able to find any answers. Thank you for your patience.

The obvious issue would be clutch slip.

The only way it could be giving less speed for the same gear and rpm.

I also have the 1.2 engine, yet at 70mph I'm sitting just above 3000RPM. It's about where it is supposed to be from videos I've found on YouTube.

Maybe it's time to treat your car to a service?

The flexi pipe, by any chance was the oil breather pipe under the airbox? Had to do the same thing myself earlier in the year. They really don't last long at all lol.

I apologise, those figures aren't accurate.

I check again and it's sitting at 60 mph at 3000 rpm and 70 at 3500 rpm.

I got the car serviced 10 weeks ago as well.

And the flexi pipe was the exhaust pipe!

Hi Charlie,

I took it to the garage today again and they said the clutch is fine and they seem to think there is no issue.

If your car is standard with 175/65R15 tyres, the final drive is 4.07, 5th gear has a ratio of 0.92. So if my maths is OK then you'll see 3682RPM at a true 70mph. Usually GP speedos overread 5-10% so you'll see somewhere around 3400 at a speedo reading of 70mph

The GP engine is usually nice and "revy" though rather underpowered. As above check the pipes under the airbox (there's one big one and one small which disappears down the back of the engine). There's a modified version of the big pipe available from FIAT as that rots through, the small one breaks off down the back of the engine, both cause airleaks. Also check the rubber seal between the airbox and the throttle body - they rot through too

Really do check those hoses and the seal. I've had to replace all three on mine, they all had rotted through. Does make the engine feel better. While your there just check that the throttle body isn't clogged up.

Like these I think:
- Breather Hose - Link 1
- Thin hose - Link 2
- modified scuttle drain - Link 3
- Airbox seal - think you might have to get it from FIAT. number 10 here: Link 4

Thanks a lot for your help guys!

A question about the checks, do I have to give the car to the garage for these checks or is this something I can do on my own?

Link 1,2&4 are easy visual checks. If they are split or misshaped, they need changing, also check the pipes are not blocked(blow throu them) with gunk,if they are, clean them out and check where they connect to make sure connectors are also gunk free.

The scuttle drain pipe is pretty easy too. Have a read here: https://www.fiatforum.com/grande-punto/337783-modified-scuttle-drain.html

Also GPs tend to suffer from what seems to be electrical issues which can come from corrosion on the battery cables (they tend to corrode at the ends sometimes inside the plastic cover). Check those out but be careful - before you tug at the positive cables you should have the battery disconnected first. Also clean up the terminals at both ends

Thanks a lot for your help guys. I checked all the pipes and seals and they all seem to be fine. The garage still says the car is doing fine and I refuse to believe so.

Could someone please record their results and let me know? Just at what rpm are you doing 70mph in 5th gear.

I really want to get this issue sorted. I hope you all understand.

For the 1.2l which I've had for the last 12 years 3500rpm on the motorway is spot on.

If it's feeling underpowered look elsewhere.

On a slightly unrelated note I used a sleeve connector to join my back box to a new centre pipe.

Fooking thing split on the road at a junction no less. Had to cable tie it up side pipe styles.

Flew along the roads was quite surprised at how nippy it was. So maybe back box?
