Technical Can I drive when top mounts need replacing?

Well speaking from experience i would err on the side of caution;)
On another car non fiat I had a noise took a while to find out what part of the car it was though weeks of checking greasing oiling tightening checking (cv joints, exhaust mounts, suspension knocking ,roll bars engine mounts etc etc all checked)
when it was up on ramps and mechanic pulled on the wheel to check movement the top mount collapsed .
so if this had been driven at speed on a bumpy road/speed bumps etc who knows what could happen .

Well it should be ok-ish...
-if it's just the topmont bearings.. i will just make turning a bit more noisy ...shouldn't really matter for another 1000 miles... it will just get more and more noisy-clunky.
-but if it's the rubber completely falling apart.. it could be a bit more dangerous: wheels changing angles under bumps.

Just drive it while keeping in mind that there is something wrong and don't push it to the limits.

I wouldn't be afraid to drive it (gently) for a coupe week or so; what will happen as the top mount gets worse is you alignement will get out of specs. This will end in tyres wearing faster and (possibly) the direction being a bit "floating". As the car still sits on its wheels, it's not likely that the rubber would "collapse", unless O-C you go for a rodeo session ...

Thanks all.

I've had the car two weeks and have done roughly 2k miles. I want to recall the top mount making the noise (sounds like left side) since I hit a rather nice pothole!

I'm having new springs put on soon anyway, so the top mounts will get done then.

I'll just take her nice and easy until the springs and top mounts are on. The alignment is a ****ter at the moment anyway.

Few things planned though:

Springs
Top Mounts
Alignment
Wheels
Tyres

EXPENSIVE...

Does anyone have a link to the top mounts needed?

Should be fine for a short while. Not too bad a job and there is a good guide on here. Having done a few of these now, I'd say an impact gun is a must for the top nut

Cheers

Ben

Ben is right with this comment, I tried everything else i think possible and then went off to ToolMart. ponut spun off instantly. These are great fro nearly all the other nut and bolts on this job. I recon 40 minutes a side to do. KYB do perfectly decent top mounts, although so far on teh Fiats I have used genuine spares and teh ccst is still reasonable. The strut with spring in situ should lift out no trouble. Ideally replace the nuts and bolts with new before reassembly You should get chaneg out of a tenner for the whole lot needed. Good luck. PS If you dont change the mounts your will start to get nasty tyre wear.

Cheers fella.

It's booked in for new springs soon. We'll do the top mounts then. After that it desperately needs the alignment doing!!

Have you got a link to the parts needed?
