I'm inheriting a 1.2 GP shortly from my dad but it has a slight problem.

Most of the time heater fan and control will work 100%.

On other occassions though you can start the car and the fan won't be running (if you left it in the on postions) and turning the knob does absolutely nothing. Then perhaps 5/10 mins later it will kick into life and work perfectly for several days again.

Does anyone know what might be causing this?

I'm guess a loose connection somewhere? Any likely culprits?

Check connection at heater fan resistor.
Check the resistor itself too.

Check also the connector on the motor side, the way you describe the issue makes me suspecting that one... Never noticed 'hot plastic / electric' smel ??

I would say the fan motor connection, I faced that problem, one of the four cables was almost burned. They are below the glover. Mine has the clima, not sure if yours has it and if not if the connection is the same.
