Technical Fuel smell in car and boot

Is the smell occurring when you are idling (e.g. after a motorway journey then stopping at a traffic light). If so it's the breather hose.

You can temporarily fix it by putting recirc on and putting the window down to get fresh air. It's a common problem, don't be worried about it

No it's quite random only had car a few days thinking of taking it back
Looked in engine bay and cannot see anything amiss
Lifting the rear seat pad and then the small grommet where the wire goes to the tank then I can smell fuel so I think it's not at the front of the car
No obvious leak under car so stumped

Is it happening when you are driving at speed or only when you are idling?

Had a bit more of a poke about in the engine bay to look at the breather pipes that everyone has mentioned and the large one to the engine cover has been bodged . It did not look to have been the correct size and has been cut down. But it was still too long and when installed kinked and was basically blocked. Hose had a light brown deposit running through it which I have now cleaned out and I shortened the hose and twisted it through 90 degrees so it is now not kinked and open. I will see how this goes and buy a proper replacement hose so this is properly fixed.
Also found the pollen filter is missing so have ordered one of these.

Just filled up the tank again and got the petrol smell again .
This time have crawled under the car to get a good look at the tank and I hunk there is a leak in the breather on the top of the tank. Clear evidence of some sort of leak but could not get right to it. Will have to jack the back up and see if I can get closer or even drop the tank.
Any ideas or tips from anyone would be grateful

Finally did this today after coming back off holiday and the car had been standing a week . There did not see anything amiss so after having to jump start the car as the starter motor would not initially work I went and filled the car up and drove home about 2 miles . I did not see any fuel while I had my daughter fill the car up , but when I got home there was a small amount of fuel in a groove on the outside of the large fuel pump/sender unit. I could not see where the leak comes from , checked the pipe and it was completely dry. So there is a leak and it needs to be fixed now need to see if the 6 month warranty is worth the paper it's written on .
Thanks for the suggestion
Any further clues suggestions of what is leaking would be useful

The "original series" Punto I had gave these symptoms. I eventually tracked it down to a hairline crack in the outlet from the pump. No way of curing it, so I had to buy a new pump complete: it was years ago, but I don't think it was too expensive. Solved the problem, anyway!
