Hi all

I appreciate this is hard to diagnose on here but my 07 punto grande tonight has suddenly started making a knocking noise if I go over a bump or uneven Road surface.

As it was late I took it to local quick fit and he took it for a drive and heard it and then put it on ramp. He looked and made the car bounce up and down, shined his torch etc and was there for a good 5 mins and said he could see nothing wrong. He then said it looked like it was the oil sump guard that was loose and that's what is causing it.

Any way reason I am posting is I have a 500 miles round trip on Thursday so if it was anything that was going to make me break down would he have spotted it while it was on the ramp etc?

Thanks for any help

Would he not have spotted that?

If it is that will I still be ok driving it 500 miles as won't have time to get it fixed now

Yea i agree I just don't have the time now I guess I'm just hoping if it was anything serious that he would have spotted it, he said it was mechanically sound and the guard thing did appear loose

Just a thought open the bonnet and the air intake pipe goes to your left and it has a small bracket and rubber check that as sometimes that bracket fails and can cause a small knocking noise fix £15 part 10 mins of your own time

Did you hit a big bump just before the noise started and does it only make noises over bumps? Reason I ask is that I had that two weeks ago and it was a broken front spring

Thanks hope it is, long as it's not something that is going to stop me doing trip

I wouldn't know what a drop link was if it hit me on the head lol, would that stop me from doing the long journey?

the drop links are part of the front suspension, cheap and easy to fix. Use Euro Car Parts online shop. Simply put your reg in the tool and it'll show you what they look like.

To check them jack each side up and grab hold of the droplink and give it a pull. Try and move it. Any movement at the joints and its gone.

I've just replaced mine on another car (Vectra turbo), less than an hour to do both sides.

fair enough fyi they are attached by two nuts. One top, other bottom.

You not got a friendly mechanic or garage that you trust and can ask to check them?

Yea i will get it checked out I'm just pushed for time and have long journey in car was just wondering if it would be anything that would stop me, ie break down etc
