Hi everyone,

On my way to work today after driving for about 15 minutes i noticed a metallic sounding "clatter" so to say. It sounded to me as if (sounds stupid I know) but the brakes were loose. It only really happened at low speeds in first gear from what i could tell.

I dont think it is my brakes though because before working theres quite a straight open road and i got to about 30mph and put the brakes on and it didn't pull any way so I kinda guess it couldn't be that.

Love to know if anyone else has had this problem or similar at least.

What sort of noise is it and when does it occur? As in when clutch is pressed or only in gear. I did write a massive reply earlier but the app came up with an error message and wouldn't post it and I didn't have the patience to write it out again. I had a similar noise when my gearbox decided to eat itself. Also what engine and model is your car?

Thanks for your reply, it was as I was bringing up the clutch in first gear from being still. I've just drove to the shop and back (a good 10 mile round trip, went to a far away shop haha) and it hasn't made the noise at all. Is its any help its a 1.4 8v Dynamic

Okay if you are rolling in neutral at around 10mph, select first but leave the clutch pressed and see if that makes the noise appear. Is it like a grinding noise?

Not to what I can hear nope, I do that quite a lot as I'm coming to a junction I know I'm going to stop at a junction, I think it might have just been a weird occurrence. I had a Clio before this car so I should be used to weird things happening hahaha

If its coming from your front passenger side see if your brake pad wear cable is still there. I had a knocking coming from the front that im convinced was that banging against the wheel or arch. It is now no longer with us, and it has stopped. Worth a check either way.

Any idea what it looks like?

If you take your wheel off you should see a cable coming out of your brake pad, if theres just something hanging off chop it off and see if the problem goes, but you will have to check your brakes yourself from then on.

If it is a knocking/rattle then it may be worn calliper tops. Mine was

That's how I'd describe it, and how much did it cost for the repair?

Free on warranty... Id look on ebay or euro car parts for the cost of the tops and then labour didnt take long when i had it done, an hour or so.

If it is this id get both changed because one started knocking on mine then a few days later the other one did. Sorry i cant be any more help.

Its probably an easy thing to do yourself but you dont know for sure its the calliper tops

That's great help thanks, I'll have a look for them see what kind of price range, I'll look into the free options first hahaha but thanks for making me aware of this
