Hello all,

we've found a tricky problem with the little Fiat. Wiring related again... would like a bit of advice on how to proceed.

Symptoms:

* For a fair while (months) the boot light has been intermittent. Seems to be on when the boot is open at certain heights.
* Recently the boot stopped opening -- but only when the boot was closed; activating the electronic boot release when it had already been opened (via the manual switch) works!

I've replaced the boot catch as per the first thing I found here ["great! It's a known issue!"] - and of course the problem remains.

I've cleaned the boot earth point, which needed doing anyway...

But frankly I know at least part of the problem lies here:

That little rubber tube with the wiring loom in it. Top left. I found today that if I wiggle those into a certain position, the boot light comes on. I know the switch is inside the boot release, so there have to be some worn cable outers rubbing together & causing an earth fault.

How do I get to the thing? Do I need to send to to a dealer? Modern car wiring scares me. A lot. But ideally I'd like to be able to at least see the dodgy bits first and make a reasoned decision.

Cheers, Ben :)

Hi I'm having same problem did u manage to get yours fixed and what was the fault?? Thanks

why don't you remove the rubber casing and inspect the wiring there? it's a 30 minute job to check and you'll have eliminated the obvious

Hi would that be the rubber tube in the top left of the pic above?? You say it's a 30 min job how would I go about doing that? If it Is a bad wire is it a case of replacing the whole loom?

Cheers

can't post pictures but i just went to my car and removed it to refresh my memory :)

Just wiggle the ends slowly but firmly and the end grommet will come out of the door. the wires are then visible and you can inspect for damage. if it's just a simple wire chafing or damage you can probably repair with a soldering iron and protect with electrical and foam tape.

Of course you might be able to replace the whole wiring loom but it's not necessary to do so unless the damage is extensive.

That's great thank you I will have a go and post pics if poss! It's working intermittent and if the boots open works 1st time so not sure if the wires rubbing

Hi I took rubber tubing off as best as I could and the wires are heavily packaged up in a material casing and some tape so am I to presume this is fine or could it still be damaged?? Thanks

what kind of tape? have you owned the punto from new?
i'm hoping there isn't some kind of botched repair underneath already.. otherwise, if the 1st layer appears fine, it's hard to imagine that there's damage underneath from chafing.

Hi no not had it from new it doesn't look like it's been interfered with it looks "factory"

Back to square one because I was kind of hoping some kind of chafing that I could repair so if the wiring fine in that duct and the mech is new what else could it be?? Cheers

The wires can be damaged under the tape, I had to remove it to discover that most of them were damaged. I am actually looking for the rubber tubing where the wiring goes as I need to replace it cos I cut it...
