Hey all,

Basically my MOT is due soon so decided to have a quick check over the obvious failing points which revealed a rusted exhaust box, so I was wondering if you guys could advise whether or not this would result in an MOT fail or not? (see attached pictures).

As well as that, some time ago my petrol cap just stopped locking. Ive tried everything, I turn it to the unlocked position, turn it till it clicks, then turn to locked position and it just falls out again. To my knowledge, this also causes an MOT fail, so I was wondering if anyone had a solution? I've searched around on the forum and can't seem to find anything.

Thanks :)

Exhaust could be a problem, especially if there's any leaks.

Don't think the petrol cap will be a problem, as long as there's a cap. The wife's car has a locked flap and none locking cap. The flap has stopped closing, therefore giving access to the petrol cap and it's passed two MOTs like that.

From experience I personally would say that exhaust is a fail, it's clearly corroded....

Either way with some comments above I'd change that for piece of mind :)

Petrol cap, as long as it seals its fine :)

You can buy all sorts of exhaust patching kits from halfords. I've got cars through mots that way more than once.

using an old rag, put your hand over the end of the exhaust, if it;s blowing really bad, then the car will fail.
If the car almost stalls, and the rag blows off with pressure then the exhaust is OK.
Our old Megane looked like this for 2 years, but it had an inner skin which was intact.

Doesn't seem to be any noticeable blowing. Upon further inspection, it seems to be the case that there is another inner skin inside which seems pretty solid. It's going in for MOT tomorrow, so fingers crossed.

Ours was advised, for two years running.
Then we traded her in, maybe it lasted another year who knows. ??
