White smoke on starting, from exhaust

What could this be? I recently had the injector seals done and in the process an injector snapped so I had the injector replaced too? If it's been started and drove then stop and start again it's not so bad, first thing in the morning after sitting there all night it's the worst?

Cheers

White smoke is usually to do with the coolant so may need to look at that. Nearly every car will have some white smoke on a very cold morning. Hopefully just this nasty cold weather!

Re: White smoke on starting, from exhaust

The majority of cars smoke in this cold weather (particularly when engine is cold, and moving slow in traffic) its not unusual for LOTS of smoke under acceleration when engine is warming up, my grandma's 10 reg focus covers the entire road in a thick fog on warm up!

Sometimes when its VERY cold some cars still smoke when warmed up.

Check your coolant and oil, if there fine and theres no other performance issues, i wouldn't worry about it.

Re: White smoke on starting, from exhaust

Ok cheers. It's worse in the cold but has been doing it a while. Oil has recently been changed during a service and coolant is ok.

Only other thing is engine runs a little loud, they said that during the service but said it would need further investigation, could be the timing/aux belt. It's a chain though not a belt.

@rodduz what engine is it mate? I was told that Diesel engines sound louder in cold weather to something to do with the way diesel engines work off heat rather than "an explosion" (from a spark plug) in the combustion camber.

1.3 mjet 75. Probably is the cold. Will see if it gets any better as it warms up. ABS unavailable message on now too! Was only serviced the other week, clearly they ****ed something up.

Re: White smoke on starting, from exhaust

Does the smoke smell of unburnt diesel? Or does it not smell at all? A diesel-like smell points to incomplete combustion which could be injector.

Also the "loud engine" is something I experienced with a simple fix. The engine sounded buzzy particularly at motorway speeds. The caused was the two rubber bushes which sit on the mountings for the black plastic engine cover were worn and allowed the cover to rattle and resonate. As a simple test, start the engine and get someone to hold it at moderate revs, and then apply pressure to the top of the engine cover. If doing this quietens things down a bit then obviously this is where to look further

The only downside here is if those rubber bushes do need replacing then my understanding is that they are NOT available as separate items from Fiat, and only sold with the engine cover itself. I fixed mine by wrapping draught excluder around the metal post that the rubber mount sits on and then put rubber bush on over it.

Re: White smoke on starting, from exhaust

I used to have a Renault Megane and i had to have all 4 injectors changed on it, at different times. When one was down or under performing it would struggle to start in the morning but when it did it would fill the street with whiteish smoke and judder when i revved it. After about 15 minutes it would clear up and be fine for the rest of the day.

It could be worth checking the injector has been programmed to the car correctly or that a new or reconditioned injector has been put in.

Hope you sort it mate

Re: White smoke on starting, from exhaust

Cheers all. I may take it back to the place that fixed my injector seals and the one broken injector to see what they think.
