I can't view the video from work, so i'm only going on what I've picked up.
I think there are know issues with a screech if the battery is getting tired.
If this is the case, then I'd be tempted to put a charger on it over night and see what happens in the morning.

Incidentally, ours does this and it's definately the belt, as a squirt of belt dressing cures it for a day or two.

Hey keat, I have just had the belt changed?! So it cant be the belt. Its going for a sleep over in the garage in the next week or so, but if its gonna cost me a couple of hundred quid, im just going to sell it and get another GP. Such a shame as I love this car so much!

Its the belt slipping due to not having enough tension. Depress the clutch and try and start. If you can start it, take it back to the garage and get it looked at.

What do you mean by "not having enough tension" and how can i depress the clutch?

I bought it privately, and the car is 5 years old so i do not know if a Fiat dealer will look at it.

Sorry for the double post, but if it didnt screech before the belt change, then it is obviously the belt? It sounds like the same problem I had with my old GP. It would screech when it was cold starting (outside temp below 10^C)
Surely you can get it adjusted for free as the garage who changed the belt obviously didnt set it up right?

Tom

Hey guys,
When turning the ignition and the engine kicking in, the car makes a horrible loud skreetching noise.

I thought it was the starter belt but have JUST had the change as the previous belt was the original.

Here is a video of the car starting and the sound, wonder if anyone could help?
Would mean ALOT! :worship:

I had the belt changed on the 13th of this month and it was screeching before (hence the belt change)

It is inconsistent the screeching, it can happen most morning when could and can also happen during the day when i use it regularly...

I just had a feel for the belt itself and still feels a little loose, could do with a tighten i think.

Thanks for all the help!

not sure which the cambelt and the starter belt is... its the one on the left just behind the oil?
Not sure about the tensioner either.
Mileage is roughly 47000 and its a 57 plate

cambelt and tensioner should be done every 5 years. 4 under hard conditions.

alternator belt goes round alternator, cambelt round the cam and drives the engine

And you can't normally see the timing belt, as it should be behind the plastic covers.

It must be the auxiliary drive belt (fan belt) he is talking about. If it were the cam belt the op would be in a whole world of pain.

If two belts have screeched and assuming the were not both too slack then too much load may be being placed on the belt. Perhaps air-con or alternator bearings are knackered and the pully is stiff.

UPDATE:
Just had the battery tested and they said it is okay...

I dont have a fan belt because the fan is electric? so it cant be that.

Guy at halfords heard something similar before about a grande punto making the same noise and he said something about a bearing going and needed a bit of oil?

Nonetheless the car is going for an over nighter in the garage some time next week so i will keep everyone informed of whats going on.

Meanwhile if you have an suggestions dont hesitate to post :)

Fan belt is the old fashioned name that is still in common use, the correct name is auxiliary drive belt because that is what it does. It drives the auxiliary systems like air con and the alternator.

With the engine off
Grab the alternator belt and feel how much "tension" there is
If it feels like your grabbing a flabby person - its too loose

Another way to test is - rotate the belt as far as you can

About 90deg is Spot on usually

if its like 110+ its way too loose
If its hard to turn less then 90 then suspect too tight
And which too can cause squeal if there is a seized bearing

have these GP's still got the water scuttle pannel leaking onto the alternator still?

Ziggy

In the S2 the drain pipe was modified, but if you haven't fitted the modified drain pipe on the S1 I'd wager a bet that your alternator is on it's way out, as that is exactly where the water drips on to.

Also why would you sell your car because it's going to cost £200 to fix? lol.

Thanks for the update dude, I was unsure of the relation :)

Because i work part time and funds are an issue at the moment, plus the rising cost in insurance it kills me to even put this on the road.

But i was being a bit dramatic on the £200, if its over £500 then i really cant afford it.
