New to the forum here and looking at buying a Grande Punto in the near future.

I was looking at T-Jets (the 120bhp model correct?) but that has really limited me finding a decent car so have started looking at Starjets (100bhp model correct?)

Am I right in thinking that the T-Jet and Starjet both have the same basic engine 1.4 16v except that the T-Jet has the advantage of a turbo?

If I've got all of this correct is it possible to fit a T-Jet turbo to a Starjet?

Obviously I would need the turbo, manifold, bigger injectors maybe?

Has anyone done this on here? Would it be easier to buy Starjet (or any other model in fact) and chuck a T-Jet engine in?

Any help appreciated as my search on the internet has just confused me more.:)

This comes up quite a lot. Stick with the t-jet quest, just be prepared to travel for it. I lived on the south coast and bought a car in Liverpool once because it was the right colour, I'm so glad I did because I loved that car.

Engine swapping is madness. The electrical work alone would put me off and your then left with a worthless uninsureable mungral.

I do see your point, but just thought it would widen my search and make it easier for me to find the right car. I don't mind travelling at all; I'm down South but been all the way up to Scotland before to collect a car.

The engine swap is my least desirable option but I don't think it's the end of the world. Should only be a days work as well.

Does anybody know about the turbo question? Don't really want to go down the route of doing mods that haven't been explored before as they usually end up expensive and not working as planned. I'd rather learn from others mistakes. Guess I could pop around to my local Fiat dealer to see what they think?

I probably worded it wrong; what I mean is they seem to me at least to be a more sort after model and hence command a higher price.

So finding a decent low miler at a decent price is harder.

I was looking at the diesels and it seems (especially the 1.9) go for peanuts compared with some of the petrol models, is this just because they're less desirable?

I'd say it was a number of things. There are more of them, the 1.9 was available from launch where as the t-jet didn't come out until 2007, the diesels cost more in repairs and tend to have higher mileage. There are t-jets on there from £3900 and plenty of choice of low mileage ones at £5000.

Problem is that I was planning on spending between 3k-4k which is nearer the lower end for T-Jets.

I'm only 17 at the moment but will probably be closer to 18 but the time I actually buy one so that really is the limit for me.

Ah I see, I'd have thought 4k would scrape a good but higher mileage one.

According to those all models come with a 'Luggage compartment Light' assuming this is a boot light yet I definitely don't have one, unless its broken and I've never noticed, it's so annoying not having one.
(Sorry for thread hijack)

should have one left hand side under the parcel shelf support little clear unit using a 501 bulb

Well it doesn't work then, I'll have to go and have a look tomorrow, it must have been broken since I bought it then because I always thought it was stupid not to have a boot light, turns out I do... :)

If its there and the bulb is good chances are your boot lock has suffered from water damage....

(or some one at the garage took the bulb out whilst it was in the dealership so they could leave the boot open on the forecourt even though they turn off after about 10 mins to save flattening the battery )

Well bulb looks fine so leaky boot lock :( How does this relate to the bulb? Does it just not trigger that the boot has been opened and therefore not switch the light on? I haven't heard much about this could you point me in the right direction for repair?

test #1

with the ignition on open the boot with all the other doors closed using the dash button..do you get a boot open warning message on the dash?

Thanks everyone for the replies.

I've looked into fitting a T-Jet turbo kit on a Starjet engine and it isn't as simple as I first thought as there seems to be slight differences between the two basic engines. Basically it wouldn't be a bolt on upgrade.

I'd rather not do an engine swap so think I will have to just look for a T-Jet.

Not surprising, the compression ratio will be lower on the t-jet for starters.

Think you have made the right decision.

'Hatchback Open' warning comes up, where does this leave me?

You said the bulb "looks fine" - is that looks fine as in you've looked at it and can see the filament?
Have you actually tested the bulb, or tried a new bulb in its place?

I've had bulbs before that look absolutely fine to the naked eye, but don't actually work.
