Re: Dreaded cold start :(

To save starting another thread, mine is also doing this now.

I thought the juddering was engine mounts, but reading this I may be mistaken.

This morning the car didn't start, normally it feels like it cuts out and then jumps in to life but not this time. It's only going to get worse from now on in I guess, so can anyone point me in the direction of the MAP sensor? It's 50 on shop4parts.

Is there any difference between that and the 1.4 8v one?

I believe it says that it is applicable for 1.4s so I would think it should be ok. However it might be best to email them and ask.

Re: Dreaded cold start :(

@D4nny8oy If im honest, i dont even know. I took the car in with a rattling air bracket and they said it needed a new ECU, can't remember at all sorry mate.

The sensor I changed is certainly the map sensor and was replaced 3 times just to be sure.

my battery: varta 12v 40AH 300A

Any ideas?

Was it definately the EFI ECU? Is yours a 1.2 or 1.4?

The poor cold start issue was usually down to the air temp sensor reading high, not a map sensor fault (unless it's a model where the two were combined into a single sensor). This is where you really need to have had a proper diagnostic to see what the sensor readings were.

Battery spec sounds ok. Is it in good condition? (proper test, not just checking the voltage).
Thanks AgnessGP thanked for this post

Re: Dreaded cold start :(

1.4 mate, i dont know what they changed, it was when i first got the car and back then I knew little about cars so never thought to ask.

does the diagnostic jjust plug into the socket that is used to read error codes?

I had it tested at halfords and I did attempt to manually charge it just in case, but obviously because it was charged it made no difference.

if you can help me here ill learn to do backflips because this is driving me nuts mate.

Re: Dreaded cold start :(

Fiat's Examiner and other diagnostic machines all use the same 16-pin diagnostic port. A code reader will tell you sod-all because often the ECU doesn't recognise the sensor as being faulty, so doesn't record an error.

A decent battery test will help. A battery can show as having 12volts, but next to no amps- so you can see how a basic multimeter voltage test across the two poles will tell you nothing. All Fiat Dealers (and other decent garages) should have a handheld machine for testing the battery condition (Midtronics, or similar IIRC).

Re: Dreaded cold start :(

I had one done at halfords (my girlfriend works there otherwise i'd avoid) and he said all is fine and gave me the ampere/voltage reading. Can't remember it though.

think it may be worth new battery anyway?

Re: Dreaded cold start :(

For anyone worried about cold starts etc...BUY A NEW BATTERY.

I have put this off and off but this week I went for it and has solved the issue completely.

Went for a 530 amp bosch battery. The standard is around 300 amp.

slightly off topic but do you know what the part number was for your MAP sensor?

0 261 230 174 or 0 261 230 030?
