Hi all,

I have a fiat grande punto 1.2 active and the problem is with 3rd gear, if the car is doing say 15mph or less it will go into 3rd gear and drive fine, but if I am going any faster than 15mph it will not select the gear and I just get a crunching noise. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Mileage? Bigger alloys? Any modifications? You don't give much information pal.

My mk2 Uno (1.1 FIRE) used to make a crunch everytime I engaged 3rd, it was apparently the previous lady owner who managed to fcuk up 3rd gear for some reason...

I don't think it will be something you can fix yourself, unless you work as a mechanic of course; if I were you, I would take the car to a trustworthy mechanic/Fiat dealer and pray it won't cost a fortune to put right!

Sounds like your 3rd gear syncromesh has gone, as far as I am aware they allow gear change at revs by ensuring the gears spin at equal revs, 15mph in 3rd would be around idle/just above meaning you can push the gears together.

Lewey might be able to give more insight as he is the "father" of gearboxes after taking many apart for his various projects.

Tbh you need to take the car to a fiat garage/specialist where they might be able to repair the box or suggest a new/reconditioned box.

Tom
