Re: Epic dash rattle :(

Yes, I applied double-adhesive tape on the pipe in the place of carrier.

Well I had a look and I did spot a pipe that was resting against a metal bracket at the back of the engine bay. Their were signs of vibration on both the pipe and bracket so I have adjusted the bracket and wrapped some fabric round it for good measure.

Whether or not this will sort the noise I don't know but it probably has saved future damage to the pipe.

Thanks again Foki

No such luck, it is still rattling. Oh well, at least it saved that pipe from getting damaged.

Re: Epic dash rattle :(

OK so since my last post the dealer has re sealed the front glass onto the instrument cluster which did nothing to resolve the problem (I didn't think it would as the sound is much deeper in the dash) they also "fixed the rattling door locks... which lasted 6 miles before rattling again

Since then I've had the instrument cluster out myself and it can't be anything to do with that as the sound is coming from behind where the curved metal section is. I assume that is what Foki was referring to but I can't see how you would get in there, it looks like it is welded up.

The reason I'm attempting to fix this again is that my GF admitted yesterday that she is really disappointed driving a car that sounds like a bag of nails and almost regrets getting rid of her old car because of it. Not what you'd expect when going from a 14 year old Polo to a GP that hadn't even hit 2 years old when we got it.

Basically I'm wondering if anyone has any further thoughts or advice they can give before I lose a wad of money by trading it in against something better built?

Re: Epic dash rattle :(

Mine has one that comes from the rooflining.

I dont know what it could be as there is nothing between the rooflining and the roof. If i give it a wack, it goes away lol.

Re: Epic dash rattle :(

Thought I might as well update in case this comes up in a search for anyone else. Turns out that the first reply was spot on!

Basically after going from being an intermittent rattle to a blooming annoying buzz for 25% of the time the car was moving I had to do something about it. I thought I'd have a peek behind the dash trim and before doing so tapped along the whole length of it. Weirdly when I tapped on the left hand side I got a similar sound (bear in mind that the sound came from the right hand side)

After popping the trim off (which hadn't lifted at all) I found that one of the clips had snapped off. After driving it without the trim... NO MORE RATTLES!!

I'd have put money on there being no way that a little bit of plastic could make that noise but... well, it did!

Currently seeing if I can get my 42 back seeing as the diagnosis did nowt to getting it fixed.

Re: Epic dash rattle :(

Glad you sorted it, its often the small things that make the most noise.

I will be fitting another one shortly!

Re: Epic dash rattle :(

Thanks, I'm really pleased that we got to the bottom of it because other than the fact that it made loads more noise than the 14 year old Polo it replaced she loves it.

We were quite lucky to find a 1.4 16v Eleganza with Skydome that the garage didn't really know the value of so we got it for the same price as a 1.4 Dynamic! Nothing else within a few thousand pounds really took her fancy so this one should be a keeper.
