Technical abs, esp, & hill holder failure

hello all, sorry if my english terminology is poor.I am the owner of a GP T-Jet.
I have had the same problem with hill holder, ESP, steering weel failure indicator on.
First i went to a friend mechanic and checked the weel sensor and cable for moisture or dirt that caused that, also the trigger under the brake. No use.
Since i was under guarrantee i went to FIAT to have it checked. It seems that there is another sensor on the steering weel column and after they contacted FIAT headquarters they took authoratation to change he whole upper part of the steering column. From what i understood the sensor doesn't go alone , the whole thing has to be changed.
Thank God i was under guarrante cause the official cost just for the part is , from what they told me,870 euro.

Hi All,

Just like to add to this thread (I also have a GP Sporitng JTD), as I am experiencing the same issue. For me it happens at any speed, firstly whilst driving across France at 80mph all these lights came on, first intermittently and then stayed on.

Had the car looked at at the nearest dealer in the UK and they said there was an ECU update for this, or it was a battery issue, as all these items depend on the battery. Once the ECU was updated all worked fine for over a month and as of yesterday it happened again.

So if any has any real ideas on the cause I'd like to know ... the car is great.

I will follow some of the suggestions and check the fuse box and ABS connector and let you all know what I find. In the mean time I will visit the Fiat dealer again for their diagnosis.

A bit of info on this thread.

Car went in for an MOT today with the ABS and other lights on.
I knew it would be a failure but wanted to see what the garage thought it was (mates garage)

They said on the front drivers side the sensor wire had split and come loose, and it would be a simple cheap fix.

Funny he should mention this as when my car went in for a service in December the chap said the rear wheel sensor had also snapped/cracked and come away. (although this didnt make the ABS light come on) and it, again was a simple fix.

So what im saying, is mabye before people take their cars to the garage for a brake pedal switch to get under the car and check all the wiring.

My undertray used to catch on some speed bumps (mabye hence it fell off on the A1 the other week) so this could have led to this.

Im usually quite good mechanically with cars but given the recent weather and work being busy ive just been lazy and should have checked all this myself!

Anyway. Just a bit of info for anyone still suffering this problem:)

Hi Folks i have a VAG-KKL cable with the four dip switch which i originally brought to clear an airbag light, and the cable connected first time and cleared it no problem and has stayed off (touch wood) all good very happy:).

two weeks later i now get messages and failure lights for ESP,ABS and Hill holder failure for my Punto 04 1.8 HGT. i tried to connect with the cable and making sure i used the correct dip switches and it would not connect with any of these ECU's

please please if anyone has any ideas why it wont connect please reply.

Cheers

in my stilo, the switch on the break pedal is on its way out and sometime it work and sometimes it dosent but when it dosent ASP and ESP dont work and i get the warning. it must be a lose connection in the switch because when it works everythin else works

Good morning from a sunny South Africa. I have just purchased a Punto T jet with this problem of the hill holder and ESP becoming inactive a few moments after pulling off. The information supplied by other members will be helpful in trying to sort the problems out. Thanks,Douglas.

Hi all,

Same issue here, now I have ESP and ABS lights on and ASR disconnected.

Is it worth taking the car to FIAT to diagnose it? my GP is a 56 plate with 47k on it and apart from that runs ok.

Help! :)

This is what the Hill Holder needs to function if one of these signals bad is the light will go on.

Necessary sensors and signals: :

- reverse gear engaged from C-CAN

- clutch status from C-CAN

- accelerator pedal status from C-CAN

- brake pedal status from C-CAN

- engine torque value from C-CAN

- engine rpm from C-CAN

- longitudinal or tilt sensor (YAW sensor located in front of the Parking brake)

- brake pressure sensor (incorporated in the ESP control unit).

- Wheels stationary from rpm sensor signal (ABS speed senors on wheels)

You really need to connect a diagnostic software to read the error codes multiecuscan or fiatodb are not that expensive and you can get the necessary cables on ebay.

You could start with the cheapest sensors which are the clutch and brake switch.

The Yaw sensors hardly every goes bad. If it is faulty you will also get the ESP fault. (I have read that some once split a drink where it is located and only after a month when the mechanic went to change the sensors thinking it was fault found the sticky liquid around the sensor he cleaned it up and the errors went away)

This is what the ESP needs to function

- Wheel speed sensors (from direct line) (3)

- Brake pedal sensor normally open (from direct line) (4)

- Brake pedal sensor normally closed (from C-CAN line) (5)

- ASR off button (from direct line) (6)

- Engine management control unit (from C-CAN line) (2)

- Throttle angle position (from NCM C-CAN line) (8)

- Body computer (14)

- Handbrake lever position (from C-CAN line)

- Warning light status signal (from C-CAN line) (11)

- Yaw sensor (Z) (rotation of vehicle on vertical axis) (from C-CAN line) (10)

- Lateral acceleration sensor (Y) (from C-CAN line) (10)

- Longitudinal acceleration sensor (X) (from C-CAN line) (10)

- Steering angle/steering wheel rotation sensor in electric steering (from C-CAN line) (12)

- Robotized transmission control unit on versions where fitted (gear engaged status) (from C-CAN line) (13)

- Hydraulic system pressure sensor (from direct line) (1) (located inside the ABS unit)

- Reverse gear engagement sensor (16)

The main sensors that might cause the failure are

Yaw Sensor

Steering angle/steering wheel rotation sensor

A new steering column will be required in some countries you can have someone change just the torque sensors (which also has the position sensors) inside steering column or buy a re-manufactured steering column for about €250 much cheaper than what fiat wants which i think is €900. You have to get one that has the steering angle sensor which is for car with ESP.

Brake/Clutch switch

Wheels speed rpm sensor signal (ABS speed senors on wheels)

Well - if it can be of any help to anyone, I took my car to FIAT and they found that there was a broken wire in an ABS sensor and they fixed it.

Hi Aleson,

thanks for sharing your experience !!
Too many time that we can read "never Fiat again" or similar for such little problems, I must admit they can become annoying when occuring repeatedly, but NO car is perfect and they all need a minimum of care and maintenance...
BTW, You took the right decision to bring her to the garage, ABS is quite important safety stuff and one shouldn't forget the front/rear brake distribution (EBD) is also managed by the ABS unit !

Regards, Bernie

My daughter has a constant hill holder unavailable message and the car will attempt to roll even with the handbrake on. And hers certainly isn't from riding the clutch - because its a semi - automatic! What the heck is it in this case???

Yesterday on my way home from work I went over a speed bump slowly as I have an Punto Abarth and suspension is low, after speed bump felt like I was wheel spinning although I wasn't then the engine management light came on, with messages on dash stating ESP unavailable, Hill Holder unavailable and check engine.. All came on and has put the car into a limp mode, cannot rev over 3000rpm.. What should I do? I have read similar posts but none have the limp mode. At the weekend I fitted a Sub woofer in the boot as one that came standard wasn't good enough, but surely this has nothing to do with why all these issues have happened.
Please someone give some advice

In my case, the error: "abs, esp, & hill holder not available" was coming every time the car started.
In the same time the ASR Led is on .
I connected the multiecuscan diagnostic and i see the code:
C 1215 Brake pedal switch

The switch located in the back side of brake pedal,
I apply a contact clean spray and the error code never coming again!
sometime I will replace him but for now work's fine:)
