Technical Frozen Alternator leading to snapped belt

Mozzarella: Thanks for the picture (huge file by the way),. Any chance of pointing out the mod because I cant see what Im looking at . Thanks

Look behind the alternator at the bulkhead and you'll see the stream of water from the drain hose. This is the standard one fitted to later cars, and not a modification. If any-one wants to resize the pic and add it to the gallery, feel free.

Right, the Customer Relations Manager has phoned me back as promised & the official line is as follows.

A Service News (Bulletin to the Fiat Dealer Network) was sent out in February this year. All dealers should've received this. If a dealership is not aware of the problem, refer them to Service News Number 7002.10, which covers all Grande Puntos and Punto Evo's. This should explain the procedure for rectifying the drain tube/alternator problem. It seems from my experience that affected models are actually petrol cars that left the factory before Feb 2010 (no diesels or cars post Feb 2010), but youre welcome to check with your dealer or carry out the test detailed in previous posts if you wish.

Following my phonecall, Fiat UK have sent out a reminder about this issue to their Network.

Any vehicle under warranty should have the work done free of charge (unfortunately i forgot to clarify whether this includes 3rd year warranty). Definately free for years 1 & 2.

If the vehicle is out of warranty it's up to the owner to foot the bill (i felt this was unfair). However, the guy suggested that owners contact Fiat on 00800 3428 0000, or ask their dealer to do so on the owners behalf, where Fiat could look at offering Goodwill in the circumstances. Personally i'd push for this in all instances as it is a design fault.

So there you are. As i don't gain anything financial from this, or even own a Grande Punto, feel free to hit that little thumbs up to say thanks. Especially as it's Christmas ;)

Are there honestly dealerships that dont know this!

Are fiat paying the dealer for carry out the mod?

He didn't say, nor did i ask, but i'm guessing not if the car is out of warranty.

Seems bizarre to me that any owner is expected to pay for this & kinda answers why we see nonsence decisions made elsewhere, which leave Fiat owners regularly hacked off.

However, my car isn't affected so i thought i'd leave the heated discussion upto someone who's experiencing this first hand. The guy i spoke to was actually excellent when i had a problem with my Stilo, so i didn't feel it fair to start a slanging match with him over this. He has clarified that a Service News was sent out, and has requested that the dealer Network have a reminder sent to them to clear up any issues over it, so i think he's done okay.

He did strongly hint at goodwill from Fiat if the owner or dealer of an affected car out of warranty contacted them.

Overall, i'd give Fiat 7/10 over this. A universal free repair would've bumped it up abit.

To be honest i just presumed he meant goodwill in the sence that the customer gets reimbursed for anything they've paid out towards the repair, but i guess if the customer didn't want to pay in the first place (and i wouldn't blame them) then either they or the dealer could reach an agreement with Fiat UK prior to repair. Maybe the dealer could speak to Fiat and agree that Fiat pay them x amount for the repair, which allows them to pass the saving onto the customer.

I guess some of the dealerships will already have procedures in place for this, and no doubt many won't

That kinda make sence?

My car is off to Fiat as we speak due to a dodgy timing issue - I may well get them to sort this whilst it's in.

Im confused, which cars are affected by this?

Thanks :)

The Service News (update from Fiat) that was sent to all Fiat dealers covers every model in the Grande Punto or Punto Evo range.

However, from experience of the cars that have had trouble on here, it's petrol cars made upto February 2010 that seem to have the problem.

The video posted by Andy shows what happens if your car has the wrong drain tube fitted.

The video by Alex shows what happens if you have the correct one fitted.

If your car is the Orange Sporting in your display pic then if it's petrol it probably will be affected. However if it's a Multijet diesel then it's less likely it'll have a problem, as the layout under the bonnet is slightly different & i think the alternator is placed out of harms way on the diesels.

I'm going to get this done tomorrow if FIAT in bolton has the flexi sleve just had a look in the dark and mine looks like the wrong part.

Seeing that it was dark i couldnt see too much how did you find fitting the pipe? Is it literally pull the other one out and slide the other in, i also seemed to be able to feel some sort of plastic pipe inside the rubber.. is this a problem?

both of those videos are of cars without aircon yes? as mine looks to have a huge aircon unit above the alternator would mine still be affected:confused:

Although it's fitted the wrong way round. It should drain to the N/S (behind the alternator) on petrol models, and to the O/S for Diesel models.

Service bulletin covers both petrol and Diesel. Alternators are mounted in similar positions (behind the block).

The car in the video above does have A/C. ;)

In my experience, the majority of alternator seizures were on models with air-con, which incidently have an expensive alternator with unique design, of which weren't available from anywhere but Fiat.

Be my guest if you think you can fit it like that! That's the only way I could get it to fit, plus it doesn't drain on the alternator anymore so problem sorted!

Phoned local Fiat garage about this, they had no idea and when I referred them to service bulletin 7002 she enquired how I got that information, I said Fiat Technical, and she said they don't speak to members of the public.

An awkward silence ensued...she said she's looking in to it and will call me back, but I am extremely doubtul I will recieve a phonecall from them.

Oh the joys.

How easy is it to replace the broken fan belt on a 2007 model 1.4 and is there any pics showing the different stages of how to do this.
I tried to download the workshop manual in the downloads section but the file has been removed from rapidshare

Easily, the hole is oval and the pipe fits either way! Almost every one I did was a petrol model. I even used to tuck it behind one of the brake pipes so the water had no chance of getting anywhere near anything. :p

There has to be a reason for the decision where to direct it for specific models, even if it looks ok.
