Hi all

As a few of you will know i have put a deposit down for a 1.2 07 punto grande and i am due to collect it next week. spending nearly 5 grand on a car is a big deal for me so i just want to make sure i am making the right choice. I have been sending messages to T and thanks mate your so helpful and have put my mind at ease over the warranty issues etc.

I am not really into cars, i mean i love driving but i am not really a speed merchant and i really just want something that looks good (which the punto does !) and is reliable but will of course get me up and down the country in the summer.

i guess i fall into the category of most people who dont really know much about cars, i have always heard that Fiats are unreliable, cheap and tacky. Whilst flicking through this forum and reading old posts i hear things like " they make the most important parts of the car for less than £10" " get to know the service desk people as you will be seeing them regularly"

I am trying not to be put off by any of this but of course these things do stick into your head when your on the verge of buying a nearly new car. I currently have a 8 year old VW Polo and that has been spot on so i guess i am hoping that my new car will carry on the trend. I realise that you can never say any car is going to be trouble free but i guess you can say that some are less prone to issues than others.

So i guess what i am asking is what are fiats like? i am really not into bashing fiats at all because i adore the way the car looks, i guess i am just wanting to know if the punto grande is a reliable little fella.

I know that i am asking this on the fiat forum so i am guessing i will get a overwhelming yes, and thats what i am hoping. I figured if i went onto a general motor forum then they would probably have the same stereotypical views on fiats and thats not what i want. I want to know what they are like from the people who drive them.

Sorry for the long post but i would love your views.

Thanks

Chris

In my opinion the GP is the best compromised option for any car in this range. I'm not gonna say itll last longer than a Polo, but, can you imagine having to be seen in that for some years? Its beautiful and if you treat it right your GP shouldn't go wrong. But if it does, just think about how your not in das autobox or le chitroen.

This is my first Fiat and only had one problem which is easy to resolve. I love VW's but their interior is poor. But I get alot of looks with my car and people love it. So im keeping it for aslong as possible. Because of the colour mainly.... My dad has a GP, my sister in law has a GP so its all good!

On a Fiat forum, much of the discussion will be about problems people have with their Fiats. The folks who are happy with their cars don't bother seeking out a forum to complain about how good their car is.

If you go to a VW forum, I'm sure you'll find lots of posts which make you wonder whether your old Polo was a good idea too...

Yeah, Fiats have had a bad rep. But, from what I've read and experienced myself with my own car, they are a lot better than they used to be, and the Grande Punto is an excellent car to own.

There fine dont worry about it. Im on my 2nd Fiat and havent had anything majorly expensive break. If stuff does go its cheap as chips to get it repaired compared to other stuff.

I've just bought my 2nd new 1.9MJET and I have had no complaints really, a lot of it depends on having a good dealer with a good service department, all makes and models will have faults but if you look after them then Fiats are as good as any for the price.
