i know its cold at the minute but my car had bit of trouble starting earlier. didnt start straight away and had to try twice to get the engine going. I waited until the glowplug light went out and then some, as i usually do but wouldnt start. once it did start it was smoking alot, it cleared up once the engine had warmed up but i felt the smoke was a bit excessive i know its a diesel so will smoke a little more than a petrol. not sure if anyone else had a similar problem and knew what i could try to sort it? had an oil change about 4k miles ago, is an 08 and covered about 10k miles, checked all the levels but none the wiser!

although mines a tjet not a diesel i had a similar problem it went a few times where it wasnt sure wether to start up or not bother i had some other warrenty work to sort out so when i took it in i asked them to check whatever theyd need to and he said it was down to software aparently i guess it is all computer operated if that helps! maybe when yours started the car was using to much diesel or something sorry but least you know your not alone!

mine used to be like that, as soon as it fired up it threw ALOT of white/grey smoke out, never smoked at all after tht, just on that first start in the morning, had it serviced and it hasnt really done it since, I think they do a software update on the service so it could well have been that

depending on what service you require they could have just changed the dpf (diesel partical filter) mine is due to have the major second year service in july, not looking forward to the price of it at a dealer just because there the only ones in the local area that can reset the service counter.

Mine is simular to yours aswell.. only done 18/19K last serviced at 12K... i had the software update for the excessive radiator temp and all that on a cold start. But it still flashes up every now and then if she dosent start first time and when ive taken it back about this, theyve said theres no log or whatever its called of it on the ecu, weird? they checked the car over and said everything was fine... i wouldnt worry to much! TO be fair aswell its been -4/-5 when ive been coming to start mine in the morning, so would assume its just the fumes evaporating in the air just more apparent cause of the even lower drop in temperature!

DPF is not changed in any service, its in the exhaust system, and is cleaned during regeneration whilst driving.

when the grandes first came out was the dpf a £700 extra and then came as standard later on? i remember speccing one up when it first came out and adding that as an oe but then it wasnt an option when i came to pruchase one just assumed it has one

did you have the smoke screen button pushed? :p

I've had this a few times as well and mine's a n/a petrol!! I'd hope that it was down to the very cold weather...that would be the most painless and the best explanation for this time of year. I'd personally see how she runs over the next few weeks and if there's no vast improvement as the weather gets better then check it out. A Diesel does kick out more smoke but if you keep her running well and give her a good bit of boost every now and then that should keep the initial smoke burst down to a minimum as it blows away the smoke deposits which build up :)

When you turn on the ignition you will see two lights, a glow plug one and what looks like a radiator one, wait for both lights to go out, then turn the key to start engine.

Before i started doing this i used to always get a puff of smoke, which is normal by the way, but now i get none (y)

umm, will have to look into that. my local dealer said my next service will be in the 300s and the dpf filter will need changing as part of the service. this is why i hate my local dealer.
