Grande Punto Series 2 Details

Announced by Fiat today:

(Sorry it's so long, but there's loads of information!)

We are delighted to finally announce the arrival of the revised Grande Punto Series 2, which sees significant changes to the range, content, pricing and positioning...

Two and a half years after the launch of the Grande Punto, we have used the opportunity of the Series 2 to revisit the range and change it to respond better to changing market trends and customer demands.

The most noticeable changes are threefold, the addition of Blue&Me as standard to the entire range, the introduction of the new ‘GP’ version to replace the Active Sport, and the addition of the 1.4 8v engine to the Active and Dynamic to replace the majority of volume sales. Numerous other changes have also been made, which will be explained in this communication.

Range Overview – Relative to Today

Blue&Me Standard

The decision to make Blue&Me standard is a significant move which has a major impact on all of our behaviour. The system gives us a significant advantage over any of our competitors, but it is not generally understood by consumers, and so must be explained in the best way to ensure we take advantage of it. It will become a core part of our communications campaign, and will also be heavily promoted (and explained) on our website and in all our literature. Everybody involved in selling Grande Punto must become fully proficient in what it does and how it works. This will be covered in the salesman training explained later.

1.4 8v Engine

All our main competitors in the segment have a more powerful engine than our 1.2 8v 65bhp as their main seller (Corsa 80bhp, Fiesta 75bhp, P207 90bhp, Clio 75bhp) and as a result the Grande Punto can suffer in terms of customer perception of performance. Our 1.4 8v provides a significant improvement in performance and driveability whilst maintaining an identical level of fuel consumption and emissions. As a result, we have introduced the 1.4 8v engine into the Active and Dynamic trim levels. This should now form the core of our sales in those trim levels, and the 1.2 will only be available to order centrally, via Vehicle Supply.

Range Logic

Early last year we introduced the Active Sport and created a twin range of comfort (Dynamic & Eleganza) and sport (Active Sport & Sporting) versions. We have now further accentuated these two parallel routes in order to differentiate more between them as well as equalising the price walks between versions to simplify the structure for the customer.

We have also deleted the ‘Active White’ due to the extreme price gap between that variant and the cars a consumer could buy when entering a dealership.

New “GP” Version

We are delighted to announce the arrival of the new ‘GP’ version. This replaces the ‘Active Sport’ and is a significantly stronger offering in this part of the market. With a unique sporty interior trim, sporty instruments, new dark headlights, foglights, rear spoiler and new, larger 16” alloy wheels it really looks the part, whilst its price positions it very competitively in a significant part of the market, that of young drivers who want the sporty appearance without the insurance-crippling performance. Available with the 1.4 8v (77bhp) and 1.4 16v StarJet (95bhp) it is also available with the excellent 1.3 16v MultiJet diesel (75bhp) engine.

Sporting Version

Compared to the previous Sporting we have only slightly changed the new car. New interiors, instruments and front grille make the car visually distinguishable, whilst the addition of cruise control as standard meets a common customer requirement. We have deleted the 1.4 16v engine from this version (it is available in the GP) and added the 5-door 1.9 130bhp MultiJet. The prices of the petrol TJet versions have actually slightly decreased with respect to the Series 1.

Active Version

The addition of Blue&Me to the entire range includes the entry level Active, which also gains body-coloured wing mirrors and the superior level of digital instrument display with the exterior temperature. This version is also now powered by the 1.4 8v 77bhp engine as well as the 1.3 16v MultiJet and in the series 1. The 1.2 Active remains solely as a price-point (replacing the old ‘Active White’) and is only orderable by contacting Vehicle Supply in Slough, with consequently long delivery times.

Dynamic Version

We have made the walk to the Dynamic much easier, and differentiated it more from the new ‘GP’. We have reduced the price walk from £1100 today to £800 in the new range by deleting the alloy wheels, which cost £300 as an option, so making it simpler to walk people into the higher version and then to sell options. As with the rest of the range, Blue&Me is also now standard on this version. Again, the 1.2 engine has been replaced by the 1.4, a much better driving experience.

Eleganza Version

Here we have further improved the top-of-the-range luxury version by adding more content. As well as the much better looking 16” alloy wheels, the Eleganza gains ESP, cruise control and rain sensors as standard all for a very slight increase in price. Due to the lack of demand the 3-door version has been deleted, whilst we have added two further engines, the 1.4 16v StarJet (95bhp) and the 1.3 16v MultiJet 90bhp. The latter also means that Dualogic is available in a diesel Grande Punto.

Walking up the range – differences in versions

To simplify the process of walking customers up the range, we have reduced the step price differences between the versions, whilst making the ‘Sport’ and ‘Comfort’ ranges more clearly differentiated.

From the Active 1.4, for a mere £800 you can walk a customer into a similarly powered Dynamic or ‘GP’ depending on the customers personal requirements. Both cars offer considerably more than £800 worth of content, the Dynamic taking a more luxurious route, with aircon (£500), side and window airbags (£300), leather steering wheel (£100) and split folding rear seat (£150) as well as a more stylish and luxurious interior trim, body coloured door handles and two rear head restraints.

Active to Dynamic
£800 OTR price difference
£1260 additional content

The GP, on the other hand, appeals to a younger target who are more interested in style and sportiness. Here the 16” alloy wheels (£550), side and window airbags (£300), spoiler (£100), foglights (£125), leather steering wheel (£100) and the dark tinted headlights, rear head restraints and sporty interior trim all add up to a very strong customer advantage.

Active to GP
£800 OTR price difference
£1525 additional content

From the Dynamic the logical walk up the ‘comfort’ side of the range is to the Eleganza. Here there is a jump of £1100, but for which you get much more content, including dualzone climate control (£250), cruise control (£150), rear parking sensors (£250), 16” alloy wheels (£550), ESP (£200) plus rain sensors, third rear head restraint and an even more exclusive interior trim.

Dynamic to Eleganza
£1100 OTR price difference
£1620 additional content

Meanwhile, at the top of the ‘sport’ range is the Sporting. The true top-of-the-range, the Sporting has unique engines, the 120bhp 1.4 16v TJet and 130bhp 1.9 MultiJet to make it a true driving experience, and also strong content with aircon (£500), 17” alloy wheels (£250), ESP (£200), cruise control (£150), sideskirts and a sportier interior over and above the GP. Although the price increase of £1925 can be logically justified (remember the improvement from 95bhp to 120bhp is worth at least £625), the Sporting appeals more to a different type of customer who wants this particular version than someone who gradually walks up the range.

GP to Sporting
£1925 OTR price difference
£2065 additional content

Colours and trims

We have added three new colours, and deleted four old colours.

New colours :
507 (opt 5CK) Rap Yellow – similar to the old Broom Yellow
448 (opt 5DS) HillBilly Azure
153 (opt 5DP) Ska Red

Deleted Colours :
163 Bolero Red
133 New Wave Blue
551 Caribbean Orange
457 Psychedelic Azure

The “GP” version gets an all new sporty interior trim, whilst the Dynamic and Sport both have slightly revised trims. The instruments become different between ‘comfort’ (white on black) and ‘sport’ (white on grey) versions, whilst all versions get the superior digital display including the external temperature. The coloured strip across the dashboard becomes ‘carbon-fibre’ effect on Dynamic, GP and Sporting versions.

Options

The range of options on the Series 2 is similar to that on series 1, but with some significant price changes to improve the competitivity of certain options.

The most significant changes relative to Series 1 are as follows :
ESP – reduced from £420 to £200
Side & Window airbags – reduced from £450 to £300
Leather is now available on the Dynamic and Eleganza (with 5 seats) for £750
New 17” alloy wheel available as an alternative on the Sporting

For the GP and the Sporting, we have also decided to continue the highly successful theme of personalisation that we started with the 500. A series of side and roof stripes plus various designs for the wing mirrors will shortly become available. Exact details and pricing will follow in a separate communication.

Pricing

In terms of pricing, taking into account the added content, we have incorporated a very small general price increase into the new range, around 1%. This is less than all our main competitors (for example Ford, Vauxhall, Renault have all increased by over 2% this year) and the new range remains extremely competitive in the current marketplace.

Marketing

Our website, www.fiat.co.uk, will show the series 2 cars from week commencing June 9th.

Ordering

Ordering will be opened on Thursday 29 May. Production starts in early June, and cars will start to arrive around mid-July.

Consumer Offers

Please note that Series 2 product is excluded from the current range of Quarter 2 consumer offers. Customers looking to benefit from our published campaign will need to be matched to existing Series 1 product and these will need to be registered before the end of the campaign period.

Re: Grande Punto Series 2 Details

I wonder why they are dropping Caribbean Orange, I thought it would be a popular colour in the Sporting.

Standard Blue & Me is good, hopefully it will actually appear in Australia.

Troy.
