General GP MPG - What are YOU getting?

General GP MPG - What are YOU getting?

Now here's something worth knowing (regarding MPG) and the GP 1.3 90 Mjet:

30mph in 3rd gear = 1800 rpm
40mph in 4th gear = 1800 rpm
50mph in 5th gear = 1800 rpm
60mph in 6th gear = 1800 rpm

Peak torque for the GP 1.3 90 Mjet is at --- you've guessed it --- 1800 rpm, give or take 50 rpm or so.

So I've adapted my "experiment" of driving like a granny to always keeping it in that gear so that I'm at peak torque or higher, and not dropping down to 1500rpm just because the car will let me.

So far, the mpg has climbed to 53.4mpg on today's 40 mile round trip. We'll see how the next few days pan out using the above information...

got mine up to 48 yesterday (very varied driving) but 50+ is what I'm ideally looking for ;) on a "brisk" drive though, I'm happy with 45... but for cruising in traffic, deffo looking for 50 +.... still only 2,000 miles on mine though... still loosening up! (but your 53 is a good figure (y) )

Yes but remember I'm driving like a granny for this particular exercise. I would hate to drive like this ALL the time. I'll eventually have to put up with lower mpg for a better driving experience (like overtaking pushbikes now and again).

...According to the computer, my 2007 6 speed Dynamic 90 (3000 miles) has returned between 57 and 64 mpg...
Greetings Mad Mike, but you're having a laugh surely? As my previous posts have indicated, I've never exceeded 55mpg, so 60+ doesn't even figure into the equation. Even on a long trip to Canterbury (all motorway at about 75-80mph) I only got 46-ish mpg. How are you getting your figures, I want to know your secret!

My car now has 4000 miles on it so I would have hoped it might have loosened up a bit but not a lot has changed lately (apart from my driving style, if grannies can be said to have a 'style'!!!).

I have something that may be of interest in this discussion, I requested a brochure from the official Fiat Oz website and with it came a letter saying how fuel efficient the 1.3 75hp diesel is, anyway here is a direct quote from the small font on the bottom of the page:

"Fuel consumption figures based on 1.3TD tested under controlled factory conditions. Actual fuel consumption may vary based on driving style and prevailing conditions. So, drive like a fun sponge if you want to get these figures, drive normally and you will get pretty close."

A fun sponge?

been waiting for someone to say the 1.4 sporting! how do you drive it? fairly normally or, a bit on the racey side?
fairly normally i suppose, but i dont hold back and do let it stretch its legs regularly. been going more motorway driving recently and so its creeping into the 40's

Did someone call me?

Wow, that's pretty honest for a dealer's brochure! For "fun sponge" substitute "like an old granny" and you will get the meaning.

The bit I don't agree with is "drive normally, and you will get pretty close". Not in my experience but time will tell...

I get approx 45-49.5mpg in my 1.4 sporting. That is at speed limits off course:).

Hope you don`t mind me commenting as I only have a Punto van with the 1.3 70bhp multijet, (an empty beans can compared with the GP :) but am interested in fuel consumption.

It occured to me, how can driving style ( with reference to individuals and Fiats methods to get the original figures.) be taken out of the equasion as much as possible to see how much is the engine itself?

Many years ago I used to see `tight` engines that over tens of thousands of miles used more fuel than another identical engine of the same type.

I thought now that didnt apply anymore and surely all engines leave the factory with the same program in the ECU/computer?

Without a rolling road and some expensive testing all I can (IMHO) think of is a convoy on the motorway, same conditions re terrain and speed, perhaps minimising driving style influences?

Just a further thought, about the comments of fuel consumption seeming better at speed.
I wonder how many acceleration/braking manouvers Fiat did to get their posted fuel consumption figures? What if everyday city driving has more of these cycles and the weight of the GP as its mass needs accelerating constantly in traffic takes its toll on fuel consumption.
Compared with high steady speed that is which would seem less of a variable.
( Or to be a cynic, seem more difficult to manipulate :)

Regards:)

I understand that manufacturer fuel economy figures are arrived at via a standard EU formula / monitored by EU / done by EU officials.

So the driving, braking and accelerating behind the figures are the same for all manufacturers in the EU in theory.

y.

Thats the conspiracy theory out then....:D

Sorry for the delay. I have simply been light on the right foot and changing up early - the same as you have! I have little doubt that keeping the revs low is the route to highest economy. Oh, and I don't slow down for corners or roundabouts - I merge!

And your mileage would be about what then? In what model?

You are so right in suggesting that it's the stop/start that kills the mileage; but merging with traffic at a T-junction is somewhat trickier!

No problem with roundabouts (if you look at where I live!).

Incidentally, I'm only getting 51.0mpg this time round; either I'm getting too fed to ***** foot around or it's too much local driving (stop/start every 100 yards at these damn' roundabouts!).

[Edit: Just notice that the common word for CAT has been asterisked out in the above sentence !!! ]

lol, i get about 37mpg on average in my mjet sporting, but i regularly put my foot down

GP Sporting 130 BHP MJet

I am only getting around 30 mpg around town and between 39 & 44 mpg on a decent length journey using motorways (keeping around 70-80)

I think this is pretty poor especially as I tend to drive quite leisurely most of the time.

Fiat boast the following figures for the Sporting:
Fuel Consumption Urban (mpg) 36.2
Fuel Consumption Extraurban (mpg) 60.1
Fuel Consumption Combined (mpg) 48.7

I think the most I have ever achieved was 44.

Does anyone else have similar concerns

I think the genral trend for the sporting is getting less than the figures suggest, I have managed 49, but that was driving like a granny in 6th on a roads in traffic (i.e. no stop start!)

yesterday, typical 200 miles of mixed driving resulted in 42....... I do still only have 2,600 miles on though... hoping it will still loosen up

Blimey!

I thought the 1.9 Mjet would get better mileage than the 1.3 (as it's not being worked so hard) but the feedback here is that you get less. Probably too tempting to use that right foot!

Anyway I'm still only getting 51.1mpg this week, but it's been more urban driving than usual - and those stop/start roundabout really do kill the mileage. This is all in granny mode.

Next fill up I intend to drive as I would like to - that is, enthusiastically where it is safe and sensible to do so. I expect to get around 45 mpg. Frankly I'm a bit worried about all this fannying around at 2000 rpm or so, that can't be doing my engine much good, it's still really being run in, about 4100 on the clock so far...

1.2 Active @ 45mpg this week, 48-50 normally

(This week is bad with traffic, crashes (not me) and, of course Liverpool playing chealsea, combined with a 4:30 finish, putting me on the M6 around 5pm, M62 around 5:10-40pm!!!!

how do you manage that? i checked again and mines improved to jsut over 40.

Just driving it normally, I broke the car in slowly for the first 1000 miles with the odd slip on the right pedal. I'll post a pic of the mpg. I ws reading the thread and thought about and took one.

well ive covered about 900 miles in mine so far (had it two weeks) and i had a quick look at the mpg last night, and it was about 37.8mpg. thats just tootling around town etc with a bit of beans now and then... on a long run i managed 55mpg to skegness, but at a steady 70mph on the motorway i would imagine this could be a little higher as the roads on the way to skegness are a bit up and down speed limit wise, so gear changes were often needed.

i knew it wouldn't get anywhere near the book figures, they never do, but it's doing exactly what i wanted as my meggy was averaging 23mpg if i was lucky! haha!! :D
