Hi chaps i have a problem (well it is a Fiat  )

only noticed it in the past couple of days.

when turning the wheel at slow speeds im getting a noise its not coming from the passenger compartment area more under the bonnet

(might be able to trace it better when my dad comes home as its hard to turn the wheel whilst in front of the car)

its a regular noise right through from lock to lock irrespective if the ignition is on or off

the best way to describe it is it sounds like a mattress spring going

had a look at the technical recalls section (before T tells me off )

5156 - Lower steering shaft. To check shaft has been flared sufficently at one end otherwise a 'knock' can occur. No potential damage/fault/safety issue. 95% of affected cars done.

now i mentioned this at the first service and they said they had checked it and my car wasn't affected but then again we all know what some dealers are like dont we

the car has just gone through 15K if that has any relevance

and more importantly will this be covered by the 3rd year dealer warranty and will i have to pay for them to diagnose the fault and does it have to go to the dealer it was purchased from??

many thanks (to all those who have read this far :D )

Right dad got home (he does have his uses)

whilst turning the wheel left to right slowly i managed to locate the problem but am not sure how to sort it on the face of it it looks simple but then again......

its the right hand front Coil spring...

when the wheel is turned the left hand spring tracks with the wheel smoothly

however the right hand side doesn't it appears to stop then move in small steps as the wheel is moved.

i have run my hand all over the spring and cant feel any cracks/ gaps/ broken spring

im assuming there is something at the top of the spring just below the turret that's sticking as i cleaned the whole area with a APC mix and rinsed and it quietens it down and the spring moves fine till it dries out

any help gratefully received :)

Top suspension leg mounting/bearing seizing, should be covered by third year, can take to any Fiat Dealer to process, be suprised if you were charged for diagnosis.

thanks Mal

going to have to be booked in after my holl's now what sort of time does the job take??

EDIT:

now i have some idea what im searching for it doesn't look like i'm alone...

It's probably around an hour to do BUT, parts have to be available, space available at dealer etc, may have to leave all day !, for third year to cover you have to be original owner or be registered with car care as the new owner, they will also ask for service history, although that fault is not applicable to service history.

for sure

thanks again its booked in for the day on wednesday but they want £30 for the 1/2 hours labour to investigate the fault where i can show them it in less than 30 seconds :(

The car was a pre registered from the dealer in question it has a FSH (by the same dealer) and i have the 3rd year warranty card......

Thanks very much - got the same problem myself with a G. Punto Sporting.
The mattress spring description is brilliant - exactly right!
Was supposed to go in last week but I had to cancel - got to re-book.
It would be great if you could let me know what part will be needed.
Thanks.

now the cars booked in for Tuesday and guess what it hasn't made a sodding noise since i booked it in :bang:

still going to take it although knowing my luck they will say there's nothing wrong with it :bang::bang::bang:

If it has a tendency to seize then maybe you are driving the car more frequently or maybe the fine weather means that water is not getting in and the bearing seizing.

Pity - mine's doing it all the time - I expect to lift the bonnet and find a Slumberland bed under there......!

well I first noticed it on a hot day and not had any rain since its probably freed itself off car gets used the same roughly every week

but we'll soon see

ive noticed the same in mine but i started having the problem about 6 months ago then it stoped. now its back and it dosnt do it all the time just every so often.
Is it the Same problem ?

if not any ideas what it is because my car is going in to fiat on monday for new glove box, fuel cap & parcel shelf. so i might aswell get this sorted while its in there.

Maybe its the power steering Pump

Good lord.....all cheap cars have an electric motor to help you turn the steering wheel......not a pump in sight.

Just tell the dealership the problem and let them sort it out.

Yipee its back one day earlier than expected :slayer:

Right the dealership replaced the Damper and the noise has gone and the steering feels nice and light again (almost like city mode was on when it wasn't)

its part number 2 they replaced on here if the link will open directly into eper..

EDIT now the rain has eased off had a look and they have actually replaced the spring itself not the damper (it said damper on the sheet she had though she showed me it) so now im confused but it works so i aint complaining

edit#2 looks like they have blathered the rubber hats in the turrets with some form of lube...
