What are the symptoms of one on its way out?
Van mileage is 105,000 serviced twice a year, enging is smooth with no rattling, no smoke on start up or heavy acceleration

120k is normally ok..

But 80k failures do happen.


Im not sure if later DPF equipped motors are better - worse..

Spot on, chains need clean oil. On a 1.3 diesel similar to Fiats with chain I had, I changed the oil & filter religiously every 6 months with over 150000 on the clock, I would still have the car if some numpty didn't write it off.

Never if you don't hear it rattling and oil is changed regularly
Just keep your ear out for any noise and change it as soon as it starts sounding bad
