hi,i recently purchased a 1997 brava 1.6,the timing belt has been replaced but i think they have not done it correctly, can any one tell me how to time this up as i cant see any marks on the cam wheels etc, much appreciated, jeff

There may be some painted on but the best way is with the cam locking tools, not cheap though.

haynes shows timing marks on the camshaft sprocket faces. One indented line on each, so you should be able to feel them

Blarts on about using special tools to keep the alignment during the procedure and recommends seeing a fiat dealer if you suspect the timing to be wrong.

Sorry I can't help more

timing marks

thanx for replying,do u know where the cams line up and wot position the crankshaft needs to be in ,thank u

tdc on no1 cylinder.

two timing marks on crankshaft pulley.

crankshaft pulley should align with mark on timing belt lower cover and with centre of crankshaft timing sensor.

The timing marks on the camshaft pulleys should face each other.

So say the book

there is a little rectangular inspection hole on the cambelt plastic cover with a little alan bolt in the middle of it.

remove this and rotate the engine with a rachet from the crank pully the marks on the cams will match up with the lines on the cambelt cover case when looking at the inspection hole. when you look back at the crank pully the punched dot on it should line up with the arrow on the block. if the three dont line up all at the same time then the engine is out of time simple!
