New to this forum, hope you can help me. Own a Brava 1.6SX(P)
Filled her up last night with petrol, went out for a 15 mile drive, got home and parked up. The car was ticking over nicely and no strange noises had appeared. When i went to move the car about 10 mins later, i was able to start her up but as soon as i took my foot off the accelerator the revs died.Left the car overnight and then tried her again first thing this morning (it starts up ok on cold, damp days anyway)and still no revs after starting up.
Im not hot on car mechanics so i was wondering if anyone has any ideas what it could be? Have had suggestions of fuel supply probs and the air cleaner clogged. Would be grateful of any advice.
Cheers

If you keep your foot on the pedal does it run OK? Its not popping or running rough?

Re: Re: no revs

HI,
If i keep my foot on the accelerator and rev it up to about 5500/6000rpm, it sounds ok, doesn't misfire or pop, but as it gets down to about 3000 it sounds as though it is struggling to keep the revs,(hope this makes sense). As soon as i take my foot off pedal completely, it dies.

Re: Re: Re: Re: no revs

No, all the lights go off as normal, thats why i am a bit puzzled as to what it is thats wrong with it. Seemed to be running fine until i went to move it.

I had this problem on Boxing Day, or one similar anyway!

Bit of History: It was peeing it down! I'd gone to get a curry, parked the car & alarmed it. 15 mins later I came out, alarm off, went to start it.......... nothing!

The car sounded as if it was trying to fire up but just wouldn't, plenty of fuel in the tank. I had no idea what was wrong with it, I rang the AA & waited for them to come.

Then I realised, as it sounded like the engine was starved of fuel or something like that, there is the Fuel Pump Cut off switch under the passenger seat. I thought I had nothing to lose and pressed it a couple of times, turned the engine over, it spluttered at first then vroom, problem solved.

Rang the AA to cancel & went home to eat a relatively warm curry. With no problems since!

Hope this helps Di.

Cheers

Re: Re: no revs

Been there, done that, looked stupid :)

Its certainly an option but they've said the car revs ok which indicates to me the fuel pump is working.

Ok a Mk1 1.6 its going to be stuck idle valve, dodgey temp sender or the dreaded dead injector. As it revs with no warning lights I'm going to rule out the injectors. (if it was them the dash would light up and it would run like a dog)

Temp sender is £7 and a bitch to change, idle valve is a 20min job to clean.

And if that don't fix it then its going to be something expensive!

(Nige, mention Lambdas and I'll slap you again ;))

Re: Re: Re: no revs

Thanks for the advice. Ill have a go at sorting the idle valve and the temp sender and if that dont work ill take it to the garage and prepare myself for a hefy bill,

cheers! will let you know the outcome.

Re: Re: Re: Re: no revs

The ECU temp sender is the one ringed in yellow.

Take the battery out and unbolt the ECU mounting bracket (4 10mm nuts IIRC) and lift it up, then you can see the thermostat housing.

Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: no revs

Have located the sensor, is there any way to test it with a multimeter, rather than taking it out snd replacing it, only to find out that it was ok?

Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: no revs

yes, check its resistance. I think the numbers are in the haynes manual in the cooling section.

Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: no revs

Trouble shooting hint related to the rev problem....

1 Malfunction of spark plugs
2. Loosen spark plug cable
3. Air leakage..crack/loosen hoses at inlet manifold
4.Malfunction of throttle position sensor & related wiring
5. Malfunction of MAP sensor and related hose & wiring
6. Low engine compresssion pressure

Try to check the easier things first

Good Luck

Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: no revs

Still haven't managed to sort out problem with my brava, noticed people chatting about resetting the ECU, will this have any effect on the problem i am having?
Your thoughts!?

Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: no revs

Have you tried cleaning the idle valve?

Disconnect the battery for 6hrs or so.

Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: no revs

Oh my God... how strange!!

My HGT is in the Fiat garage at the moment cause of exactly the same problem.

My car was drivable but it felt like I was pulling off in 5th gear and my revs just died one day.

Fiat told me it was the Potensionmeter on the throttle peddle.

Although my car is under warranty it cost £01.60 plus £55 just for them to look at it.

Hope this helps mate.

Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: no revs

typo:

it cost me £301.60

Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: no revs

Known issue with the HGT.

Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: no revs

Cheers guys, will disconnect the battery and clean the idle valve(once ive located it)
Just hope it does the trick, feel quite lost without my baby running!:0(

Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: no revs

Its the black cylinder mounted on the back of the manifold right by the throttle body.

Its probably full of crap.

Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: no revs

Thanks Tom,
Will give it a go first thing tomorrow.
Was just wondering, could it be something as simple as the injection system fuse blowing?(have to admit I haven't checked the fuses yet)
