Where do I start? Is this a common problem?

My dipped beam headlamps are constantly on when not selected on steering switch.

Any help would be grateful.

There is a relay [T01] in the engine fuse box. Check it is not faulty i.e. the contacts are stuck. I have attached a schematic, ask if you have any questions.

Found TO1 its to the lower right of the steering column where the diagnostic socket is.

Pulled it out. Lights off. Dashboard indicating lights on. Suggest fault pre relay coil (control side)

Wonder what next?

Any suggestion would be welcome.

Side lights on.

The switch inputs into the body computer which should output a negative to the relay contact 86 when the ignition is ON and the switch is in headlight position and main beam / dipped is in dipped position. The control for this interaction is the body computer located behind the cab fuse box.

So the relay is energised by coil being pulled down to ground -ve by the computer (a transistor switch).

Would it be true that if the dashboard indication shows lights on then either the input signal to the computer or the computer is faulty.

Could it be something in the steering column light switch. (selector).

Knew mine fault would be an intricate one.

Can you confirm it is only the dipped beams that are faulty? The sidelights can be switched ON/OFF and main beams work normally?
Your first question above is correct in its assumption. There is 12v on relay contacts 85 & 30, contact 86 goes negative when body computer selects dipped beam and contact 87 switches the 12v through to the lamps via their individual fuses.

When I pulled out T01 the dipped beam bulbs were out but the small lower powered bulbs were on. Just tested now and yes the high beam is working fine with this relay out. Edit. I can see where you are coming from. Just tried the switch for the side lights and they must be faulty also ie they were on whatever the switch position.

So to recap it appears that sidelights and dipped beams are permanently ON irrespective of the switch position or ignition ON/OFF?

I have to go now for a while. some reading for you attached.

Thanks very much RayC. You have been very helpful. Appreciate your time you have given.

ISTR reading somewhere that a faulty stalk switch or wiring can cause the BCM to default the dipped headlights to be always on with the ignition energised.

My guess is that the switch is faulty. Looking at the schematic shows that a short inside the switch [H005] would give the fault described. A short across A pins 4 & 7 similarly.

Thanks again. Will have a look at this at the weekend. Think you have given me some brilliant info that I can work with. It is a high probability that something has happened at H005.

Hi,
If you get Multiecuscan (MES) www.multiecuscan.net a ELM327 interface and a A3 "Yellow" adaptor lead you can confirm exactly what is wrong. At the moment it coul be the body computer (unlikey) or the stalk switch/wiring. MES will let you read the status of the stalk switch and turn the lights on and off regardless of the switch position.
It c0sts €50 and the interface and leads is about £28 e.g.

You need a laptop running windows XP or newer to run the software.
Worth every penny if you do your own maintence. A single diagnostic read at a dealer is more than that.

Unplugged the two connectors on the steering column switch assembly. The one with the red retaining clip and the other black one which may be the air bag connections. Did not remove the main beam lights on dashboard. Lights indicating still on. Computer or input connections?

You need to get MES on it. Where are you located?
