hi have had two faults which main fiat dealers and other so called auto electricians cant solve.First engine starts ok but engine light stays on followed by the heater coil light flashes on and off for about thirty seconds then goes off.
Engine still runs fine but my speedo does not work either perhaps somebody as some pointers please
fault codes are 0380 board relay thermo starter or pre heater.
1612 deisel filter heater rely.
0148 third piston deactivation

Think the all share an earth front left down and in front of the ecu that would be top of my list for investigation.

Thermo starter and third piston deactivation are in the same loom accross the front of the engine so maybe loom damaged should be easy enough to meter out the wire from their connectors to the ecu.

Starting with the third piston deactivation the green/orange wire goes to pin111 on the ecu .. light blue/black goes to ground.

Thermostarter relay pin 85 goes to pin 15 on the ecu.

Diesel heater relay is t19 far right relay driven by pin 110 of the ecu

Hi goshawkpt did you solve this, i have exact same fault/codes & would appreciate any advice

Regards

Tony

hi glad to see you got still have not sorted my problem which is the same as yours, you breather valve u/s where is this located on the engine have rung fiat they dont know can you beleive it.

have sorted problem a blown 15 amp fuse for engine thermal heater in main fuse box in engine bay

Hi goshawkpt & others,
I have exactly these problems: speedo not working, engine management light on, glow plug warning light flashes for 20-30 secs at start up. I also have a blown fuse (I think the one next to slot17) in the under-bonnet fuse box.

I took it to fiat specialist and he diagnosed a speed sensor problem - which was replaced but did not solve the problem. He also tried to replace a blown fuse but it just keeps blowing.

Any ideas would be appreciated.

Thanks Tim

On mine it was the oil vapor heater that shorted blowing the fuse that also controls speedo. Disconnected it replaced fuse everything works fine.you'll find it under the Egr solenoid housing in centre above engine.

Too add to the above, it's a small black box built into a rubber pipe, directly infront of you in the middle as you open the bonnet under the black retangular panel.

I have the exact same problem on my 06 (old model) Ducato. Can anyone tell me if the 'small black box' as described by T14086 above is visible in either of the photos below? Thanks in advance.

Had the same fault ( fuse 11 blows immediately ignition switched on, no speedo, engine red light on and 'hester coil' warning for 20 seconds ).

Thanks to all who have contributed to this fault issue I have just fixed mine whilst touring Spain - located fault to the crankcase heater unit going near-short-circuit and left it disconnected to stop it blowing fuse 11. I still get the heater warning for 20 secs, but I can live with that.

The unit is BELOW the large horizontal pipe shown at the bottom of the 2nd photo, the plug connector is about 4 inches along the pipe from the heater unit towards the air filter box. I could only access the plug from under the front of the engine, its between the bottom of the radiator and the engine.

I would really like to know if this heater is required as I have read a comment that its not actually 'used' ? on uk models ( but is obviously supplied with power on start-up ) as it looks a bit of a sod to change ?

Found the posting below on the OutAndAbout forum --

Most problems with fuse 11 blowing are caused by a heater in the front breather box that is not actually used on UK vehicles. It develops a short and you lose Rev lights, speedo and other minor systems. The fuse will blow (vigorously) every time you switch the ignition on until you either replace the pipes with the heater in or just unplug it. That's what we do!

This problem affects almost 50% of 2.8JTD Ducato's between 3 and 5 years old irrespective of mileage and the plug-in diagnostic route does nothing but send you off on a wild goose chase even if the fuse is there for it! "

The 'heater breather box' which I assume contains the heater element is a black plastic box abot 5"x5"x 2" with a short pipe to a connector from which the elctrical connector is mould into, the pipe then continues to the air filter box via an oil separator.

The black box looks like its connected to the front of the engine crankcase by a mould flange.

Why on earth you would need to heat the oil vapour exiting the engine I cannot understand ?

Does anyone know what this heater does and whether its worth the cost and trouble changing it ?

Here's a better picture of the heater. (taken from below the car)

Great forum. Had exactly this problem on 2004 Kontiki this week. Luckily I found the forum before I rang for nearest Fiat agent (60 miles away in Inverness). Gave me confidence to drive it in without worrying about any harm. Must recommend Inverness agent Donald MacKenzie as mechanic came up with exactly your explanation, replaced fuse and said if it was his he wouldn't bother replacing the breather heater (especially as it costs £90 and does nothing)!!!

Great forum, just back from the first trip with my Avondale Seascape 5ELX MH and when restarting to move the MH onto the drive, the same fault was present, the local dealer assured me that the glow plug and Injection lights are not connected so must be two different faults, he suggested I go in for some diagnosis. I pulled the plug off the heater and cable tied it out of the way of the electric fan, replaced the blown 15A fuse and after two re-starts the fault had cleared. Excellent!! :):)

Hi all. I have exactly the same symptoms as this. No speedo, engine light on, glow plug light flashing on start up.

Fault code was read a while back which indicated speed sensor. I changed the speed sensor myself but this didn't fix the issues.

I since discovered this thread, and disconnected the oil vapour heater plug as suggested but the fuse still keeps blowing. Is there anything else that shares this fuse I could try? Thanks in advance for any help!

Fuse 11 supplies the following where applicable:

Instrument panel
Oil vapour heater
Air flow sensor
EGR solenoid
High pressure pump 3rd piston solenoid

Diesel heater control relay
Relay T20 (Auto transmission)
Thermal starter control relay, or
Heat flange control relay

Thse last two items are alternatives, and are under the plastic hood at the top back of the engine bay.

Crikey thats a lot of systems on one fuse! Thank you for your reply Communicator. When I (eventually) get to the bottom of this I'll post what the problem was
