hi all
somebody somewhere must of had this my van is a ducato 20jtd on a 53 54000mls it started on the way home from work i noticed a strange smell coming from the heater and the van had lost power (n)took it into the garage where it came up as the mass air flow sensor so ordered a new one and had it fitted while the van was in i thought it made sense to have the oil air and diesel filters changed anyway got the van back and there was no change it was smoking really bad and juddering i disconected the maf and the van seemed to run a lot better but was still smoking phoned the mechanic up an he reckoned it must be the glow plugs i decided to get a second opinion the next guy i showed the van to said"oh yes its definetly the egr valve" followed by "or it could be the cat blocked up" has any one had the same problems if so what was the outcome also i bought the egr and it looks quite straightforward to fit apart from getting those funny clips off are these reusable or do you just buy new ones thanks for takin the time to read this any input very much appreciated

Think i've got same problem but without the black smoke. I had diesel filter changed but didnt do any better. Spoke to mechanic that said it could be 'efg' valve??! I find van gets better when it gets warmer wondered if yours is the same? Mine seems to choke when i put foot to the floor or when it reaches turbo kick in point. Dont suppose your fuel gage on dash got stuck too high couple of weeks before did it ? Another theory was water in diesel.

im not havin the water in the diesel put 30quids worth of the shell dear stuff in it have you tried disconnecting the air flow meter if i re atach mine it runs really lumpy just wish i could sort it out its doin my head in:bang:

I know how you feel its gettin to me as well! Im not good with engines so wouldnt know where meter is! Sounds the same problem though doesnt it? I took air filter out and ran it around the block but didnt seem any better; again sounded rough

mines at the back of the air filter theres a hose that comes off the air box then a black plastic fitment with a plug going into it its a bit fiddly but the plug comes off pull it off and then try it if the van runs better then you know its the air flow meter

Cheers I'll try that tommorrow and let you know how I get on. Hasn't helped you much though has it!! The quest goes on

Black smoke usually means that there is too much fuel and too little air in the mixture. Might be a dirty air-filter.

Hi shask, I took the air flow meter off and engine seemed a bit better but not perfect- still lack of power but chucks a shed load of black smoke out of exhaust like yours!!

van goin in garage wednesday having new egr fitted 89 quid eurocarparts let youknow if it works

just picked the van up and at last its all sorted(y)it was the egr valve now she pulls like a train but without the smoke thanks to everyone for their help and input on this as soon as the valve was changed it was a completely different van!!!!

:D Feelin the JOY!(y)

Mine has same symptoms. Changed EGR valve. No difference. Garage said it was the fuel pump?. Sent away and returned as o.k. Garage checked injectors. Now saying its a fault with ECU. Any help.

Hi, exactly same problems with my 07 - black smoke/power loss/rough idle/eng management light on, change mas Air flow sensor twice, 2 egr valves , new oil-air-fuel filters, new injector, garage still cant tell problem eventhough hooked up to dignostic computre several times, any other ideas ?

Hi John.

Does it idle rough all the time or just when hot?

Does the water temperature gauge show normal operating temperature(about half way after a run)?

Your garage hasn't a clue. They could have made a blanking plate for a few cents to rule out the egr. A graph of the reported air mass would have ruled out the maf sensor. A diagnostic computer is only useful if the person looking at it knows what their looking at. Check for loose or split hose or damaged intercooler or fecked turbo.

Hi guys I know this is an old thread but I had exactly the same problem the other day at work, I thought I would share what I found. Customer complained of no power, black smoke and would only rev to 2200rpm. I checked for fault codes which flagged up a MAF sensor along with an ECM fault code. Cleared the codes and the problem remained.

I carried out a few other checks hoses etc and found that the air valve flap had stuck closed and was returning to its closed position in the throttle body. If you apply a vacuum to it it should close, but snap back open when the vacuum is taken away by the solenoid. It is restricting the amount of air going into the engine causing it to run rich and flag up the MAF sensor which is not the fault.

I disconnected the hose that goes to it so it cant move now and the flap locks straight so it has full air flow. Refitted all removed parts and it now drives as normal. Do not go stripping off the EGR valve, check this first. It is located right in front of you with 2 10mm nuts holding it on to the inlet manifold.

Hope this helps it cured the problem with a new valve.:)
