After stripping down get a 35mm exhaust clamp, fit this to the driveshaft a short distance from the CV joint and use two levers to pop the joint off. Saves risking hammer damage or accidentally pulling the inner joint out.

I was working on separating the intermediate and right hand axle at the cup.
any idea how they are suppose to come apart?
This is all to replace the CV boot anyway.
Your method sounds really good to get the CV joint off.
