Doblo Speeding Warning - IMPORTANT

One of our technicians has found out about the speed limit and how it applies toa Doblo, the hardway.

He has been done for doing 71mph on a dual carriageway.... in a Doblo Cargo 1.9 m-jet. He saw the camera van and sat at what he thought was bang on the speed limit, until the ticket came through to the office..

Here is why..

The speed limit for a car or car derived van up to 2000kg GVW* or Max Laden Weight is 70mph on a dual carraigeway
http://www.highwaycode.gov.uk/09.htm#103

The Doblo Cargo 1.9 m-jet sx GVW is 2010kg and therefore the limit is 60mph
http://www.fiat.co.uk/cgi-bin/pbrand...ID=-1073787853

so 3 points and a 60 fine for being 10kg over the threshold - how harsh is that considering the guy was doing what he thought was bang on the speed limit! This also reduces the speed on single carraigeways too!

The Cargo 1.3 m-jet is bang on 2000kg

We are trying to find out if this affects the MPV version as the kerb weight of the 1.9SX is 1430kg, which only leaves 570kg, but I dont know how this is calculated, if at all in additional payload

Before anyone bangs on about that he should have known about the speed limit for a van - I am an advanced driver (IAM) and have to admit it never occured to me to check this!

*GVW is Kerb weight + Payload

Re: Doblo Speeding Warning - IMPORTANT

No, it doesnt work like that. The van doesnt have to be carryng the max weight, its just that its capable of it and hence the max GVW figure. He was no where near 2 tonnes, probably only about 1500kg, it makes no difference :-(

Re: Doblo Speeding Warning - IMPORTANT

Indeed a lot of people could get caught out however I think this is wrong. Only recently were the laws changed so that truck drivers are limited to 56mph on the motorway of trucks over 7.5ton so why would a 2ton Doblo be limited to 60mph?

I'll do some research but keep us updated, and I'll make it a sticky

Re: Doblo Speeding Warning - IMPORTANT

er, the post i responded to dissapeared!

Any vehicle with a max capable weight (doesnt have to be carrying it) under 2000kg (2 tonnes) can do 70mph on a dual carraigeway.

Any goods vehicle up to 7500kg (i.e. over 2000kg and under 7500kg) can do 60mph on a dual carriageway

Good vehicles over 7500kg can only do 50mph

The Doblo Cargo 1.9 has a max capapble weight of 2010kg - 10kg over so fits in the centre section. This is why he has been done, and on paper they are right to do him unfortunately. We have rung the "safety" camera scheme and been told this as well!

Re: Doblo Speeding Warning - IMPORTANT

Just checked the Fiat sales leaflet for Mrs_G's 1.9 JTD sx.

GVW 1935Kg. This is made up of a kerb weight of 1310Kg without driver plus a payload of 625Kg including driver.

Looks like the m-jet versions are a bit heavier than the older JTD models.

Fiat seem to have let their eye off the ball on this.

To be honest I'm surprised your guy was being done. I spent a year in ignorance driving my 3.5 ton van at car speeds until I started doing my IAM motorcycle training. It was only when I looked again at the highway code that I realised I had been braking the law.

I raised the matter with the IAM examiner, a serving police motorcyclist, when I took my test. I was interested to know how 'lucky' I had been in not getting any speeding tickets. He said that he tends to take a pragmatic view of the situation - If they enforced all speed limits the roads would come to grinding halt - HGVs of 7.5 tons or more are limited to 40mph on single carriageways, can you imgine the queues behind a string of them?

Perhaps Fiat should be asked to issue a recall on the effected Doblos. They all need to have their 'faulty' VIN plates replaced with modified ones that state a GVW of 2000Kg. Easy!

Re: Doblo Speeding Warning - IMPORTANT

Hmm that's strange Niall, as my axle weights are plated as 1000kg front and 1200kg rear that's a total of 2200kg hence why you have to have the correctly rated tyres for the axle. I'll check out my plate under the bonnet in the morning but I'm sure it states the axles and then the gross is something like 1123kg??

Don't add the axle weights. The kerb weight is always less. My 3.5 ton van would be a 3.9 ton van if I added the axle weights together.
