Hi,
Welcome to FF.

Yes, normally the water detector just replaces the plastic drain plug that comes with the new filter.
You are also correct that the detector is for water that collects in the filter.

The white plastic cap has the new washer on it as well, don't be tempted to just remove the old sensor and screw it back onto the new one as I did......it leaked as the seal was slightly perished....I changed it over and solved that leak.

hi thank you both off you for your help yes I did use the New seal it was already stuck on the bottom off the filter cheers guys ill probably need your help again. cheers chris.

Best practice to fill the new filter with fresh fuel, before mounting, so you don't need to bleed the system, and you avoid the injectors to work dry for a moment..

The JTD engine only needs you to switch the ignition on several times for a few seconds to prime the filter and supply pipes.

Always do mine 5 times for 5 seconds each time. Always starts immediately on the 6th time when turning the key fully to the start position.

The high pressure, mechanical fuelpump does the priming, but I can't see how, when the engine is not running.
By turning only the ignition switch, the pump doesn't work....

The high pressure side is not drained when you change the fuel filter, just the low pressure side around the filter. The pump acts as a one way valve. The electric low pressure "lift" pump is enough to re-fill this give a few cycles as Davren states. I used to prime cartridge fuel filters in the "old days" of mechanical indirect systems with no lift pump but it's not worth the time and mess with modern systems. I still prime oil filters though.

OK, so the Doblo JTD has two fuel pumps.
My 2004 Alfa GT jtd doesn't have an electrical pump, just the highside one.
At least, I haven't found a second pump during 8 years of owning and maintaining this car, there is no "buzzing" from an electrical pump after turning the key as well...
So I keep on filling my new fuel filters on this car, and as the oilfilter is mounted sideways, no way to fill that one, I'm afraid...

The fuel filter, fuel return manifold and pipes are primed by the electric pump inside the fuel tank, which operates for a few seconds each time the key is turned to the MAR position. The common rail and it's pipe from the engine mounted high pressure pump, and the 4 short pipes from the common rail to the injectors don't drain out when replacing the fuel filter, so don't need priming.

I can't hear my electric fuel pump running unless I remove the rear seat or listen very close to the underside of the fuel tank.

I just had a look at my ePER, and guess what: there is an electric pump IN the tank as well for the Alfa GT jtd...
Never knew that, so you learn something new every day!
I'm still going to fill the fuelfilter like I did in the past, but will do the ignition key turning prime procedure as well, thanks for that!

Hi guys yes I did fill the New filter with fuel I didn't make much off a mess stuffed some rags under the filter when I took it off removed the battery to gain better Access as I had big Hands :D primed it few times and she fired up but did struggle first turn turned her over few times and job done cheers guys for your much needed help.(y)(y)(y)(y)
