Gearbox Oil Leak

hi everyone,

im after a bit of technical advice.

I have a gearbox oil leak on my 57 plate doblo dynamic 1.9 120 bhp multijet.

I have just taken my under tray off (what a pain !!!) and im 99% sure its coming from the join between gearbox and engine i.e bell housing.

it is definetly gearbox oil because of the colour and smell.

I think that it must be the gearbox input shaft oil seal.

is this a common fault as my garage reckon its a 7 hour job to remove gearbox, replace seal and refit box.

also if it is this seal then wouldn't the clutch be contaminated aswell.

my car drives fine and has no clutch judder and still changes gear ok.

many thanks for any help given

Re: gearbox oil leak

sorry the title should have read Gearbox Oil Leak

is this a fiat thing with things going wrong.

I had a 24 year old Toyota previa with 105,000 mile on it and it was reliable as anything.

my 9 year old fiat doblo with 43,000 miles on it has the following wrong with it !

gearbox oil leak !

dodgy wiper/light stalk !

worn out front wiper mechanism !

the only reason I sold the previa was the terrible fuel consumption.

wish I had kept it now

my 1.9 diesel FIAT ran out of ENGINE oil at 130k miles, (accident damage:bang:),
replaced damaged hose and refilled - did another 250k Miles,
all on one clutch - never came apart:worship:

personally I'd just keep topping up the oil until it becomes an issue..

TBH - IF I took it apart I'd replace the clutch anyway.. so why not wait until it's worn-out / contaminated. ,

no reason it cannot do another 150K miles without issue.

thanks for this reassurance.

its got one of those stupid dual mass flywheel types of clutch so im hoping it doesn't need a new one (big bill!)

I used to work in a fiat dealer parts department about 10 years ago and swore I wouldnt buy a fiat but it was the only thing I could find for the money I had that could replace the previa for the space !

I also needed a diesel to tow a caravan.

all the ford galaxys types were over priced and had all done stupid skyhigh miles !

I had the previa for 10 years and only did 40,000 miles in it.

maybe once I have sorted out all these problems It will give me another 10 years trouble free motoring.

well I bit the bullet the other day and took my doblo to a garage recommended by my father in law.

they confirmed my diagnosis of the gearbox input shaft seal leaking !

its a common fault on doblos, puntos and multipla's !!

my wifes 16 year old Hyundai amica has never had a gearbox leak or my old ford escort or my old Volvo 340 or any of my other cars !!!

they replaced the faulty seal and the driveshaft oils seals aswell.

£575 quid later I hopefully have a fiat doblo that doesn't leak gearbox oil.

if I have another big bill like this again with the doblo its going and I will never buy a fiat again !!

its only a 10 year old car with 44,000 miles on the clock. it should not have faults like this.

im guessing it will never be as reliable as my old Toyota previa that was 23 years old with 105,000 miles on it !!!

any views on fiat doblos reliablilty will be welcome.
