doblo dpf issue

hi im running a fiat doblo 19 multijet on a 07 plate, got a recurring problem with the engine failure light coming on. Diagnostic code shows 2002 diesal particulate filter efficiency below threshold. Bank1
On control module $10. Could anyone tell me if they have come across this and whats req to fix it. P.S where is this filter located.

Re: doblo dpf issue

Hi,

2002 is a non-fiat code (P2002?) & filter is on the exhaust.

My advice is to let a dealership deal with this (unless you have fiatscan) as the DPF parameters have to be carefully monitored before a correct diagnosis can be made.

could I check these perameters using a Gendan (EOBD) scan tool, and what do i need to go into to do it.

The DPF isn't covered by EOBD, so a standard tool wouldn't cover it.
If FiatECUScan covers your model that's probably a better bet.

Re: doblo dpf issue

I had the "engine failure" message on Wednesday. I immediately took it to a garage in a small village that I was driving past. They read the code, said DPF needed a regen and performed the regen. The mechanic said that if the light stayed off for the remaining 125 miles of my journey then the DPF was ok, if not then I might need a new one.

The light stayed off, DPF is ok! The mechanic said that he had done an identical regen 6 months before, the "engine failure" message would seem to be a bit of scaremongering designed to lead you to the dealership.

Try a good independant garage, see what they say.

(The garage I was at was Belmont Motors, Wix, Essex)

I think you are being a little harsh. A DPF clogging/blockage etc. is an important issue to attended to as quickly as possible. Likewise for engine related component failures (e.g. Lambda sensor causing over fuelling and burning the CAT out at great expense.)

Many of us here have sufficient knowledge and experience to "read between the lines" etc. and are able to make sensible judgements. Most car drivers have little or no knowledge so have to be given SIMPLE and LIMITED IN SCOPE messages to get them to get their cars to a garage to have (hopefully) someone more experienced and with appropriate kit (if required) to determine the real state of the vehicle.

Of course the ECUs/control units could issue more meaningful messages (which they do like: Front LHD open) but in reality many of the 1000s of error messages that could be posted would mean nothing to many and they would have difficulty in try to relate the message to the garage over the phone. Garage would almost certainly say "bring the car in for us to look at". (Engine Failure - Return to Dealer)

Re: doblo dpf issue

I have no experience of the Doblo DPF.

However I have a Croma 2005 on 50K miles with no DPF issues.

What is critical for diesel DPF filters is getting sufficent mileage between engine starts and stops to ensure that the engine/ECU is able to do a propper regenerative cycle.

Short start/stop journeys for vehicles fitted with DPF filters is the kiss of death for the DPF and/or the engine (if oil dilution by excess fuel takes places).

With kit like FiatECUScan or Fiat Examiner or other professional diagnostic kit then DPF parameters can be read and DPF regenerations enforced.

Re: doblo dpf issue

Longlife Exhaust Systems

Improve your Diesel Car Performance

Modern Diesel engine cars are fitted with Diesel Particle Filters (D.P.F.).

With the constant “Stop/Start” of normal urban driving D.P.F’s will clog up with soot. The engine management will regenerate the DPF by injecting a larger amount of fuel to raise the temperature to burn off the soot. Regeneration cannot clear all the soot from the DPF so eventually the car will lose power, increase fuel consumption resulting with the Engine Management System placing the car in “Limp Mode”.

2 Options

Remove and replace the D.P.F.
Example: Citroen Xara Picasso 1.6 HDI D.P.F. £425.26 inc vat
Fluid £104 inc vat
Plus removal and fitting !!!!!

2) Alternative: Remove D.P.F. and fabricate a replacement Stainless Steel Pipe, read and re-map ECU to standard program or re-map to a performance enhanced program.
Gains
No future expense of D.P.F.
Increased performance and economy
No effect on emissions

Example: Citroen Picasso 1.6 HDI 90 BHP increases to 112 BHP
Torque 215 Nm increases to 247 Nm

Torque increases will result in higher miles per gallon

Re: doblo dpf issue

citds,

this is blatant advertising..

No one will have problems with thir DPF unless they only drive short trips or drive like a granny.

When I got mine I had warning messages about DPF.

I ran a Fiatscan forced regen did not help so I put an injector cleaner in the tank and went for a long thrash up the motorway.

Holding the engine at 3000+ revs for an hour or two will clean out all the crud.. however keep your eyes peeled for the nice Mr Plod man.. 3000 = 80+ MPH (120BHP 08 Doblo)

No problems now I try to give it a 20 min 80+ run each week and now DPF nice and clear!

Re: doblo dpf issue

Hi which injector cleaner did you use, ive seen a diesal particulate filter cleaner (granville) on Ebay this is also just added to the tank, wot's your thoughts on this, do you think this does the same type of work. My doblo is on a 07 with 88000 miles on the clock and other than the DPF issue ive had no other probs.

I have no experience with the Granville product so not sure, I expect they are nearly all made from similar compounds so should do the trick.

Thing is if your injectors are blocked or gummed up then you will make more smoke so blocking the particulate filter up quicker.

I have used and can recommend Millers Desiel Ecomax which really cleans the injectors and provide a good power boost too

This time I used STP diesel Injector cleaner. One shot 250 ml added to tank at £2.99 from local car spares shop.. it did the job.

Re: doblo dpf issue

DPF's will only re-generate so many times and dealers are charging £900 + vat + fitting, could be worse VW's ar £1100 + vat + fitting !! I do not see the point of DPF's they stifle our engines and hoodwink us into thinking they are good for the environment. How can they be good for the environment? To re-generate every 1200km the ECU instructs the engine to over-fuel to raise the temperature at high speed, this blows some of the crud out of the exhaust pipe, so who pays for the fuel?
